Hi all,

I've searched all over the help, t&c's etc but can't find any info.

How do I delete my STW account, or can I at least change my user name?

Cheers, Martin

you can't Google will find you forever now and all your freinds and employers will know what you've been saying.

or you could email the mods and see if they'll do a name change. They will not delete your posting history though.

You can't, you could try nicely asking the mods to change your username. They might, or might not..

If you email the mods they can "ban" your current account forever and then you can set up a new one. You can't have your old posts deleted though. Your current account will also disappear from the list in the "Advanced Search" page.

You could always try STW:

Something else?

Website log-in / user name
subs@singletrackworld.com – 01706 814397

I think your posting history will remain but under your new 'monica'.

EDIT: probably wrong contact, as others say try moderator@singletrackworld.com!

It can be done.
Spammers get their accounts and post history deleted all the time. It can also be done at the users request with a good enough reason.
Ask the mods. Reporting your own post would be one way to contact them.

I did think that there HAD to be a way of closing an account. Anyway, changing my username would be fine/better. Just wanting to be a bit less googleable so to speak. I'm careful what I say online so not concerned about that.

Cheers

Oh yes, I'd never spotted that before.
Reporting any other post in the same thread would do the job.

I changed my name once.
I know someone who had there entire account and post history deleted at their own request for privacy reasons.
You need a good reason though, otherwise the mods would get fed up of doing it all the time.

Not my call, but I'll flag up this request with The Powers That Be for review.

I wouldn't get your hopes up too high as it's not something generally done, for a whole host of complicated reasons that aren't immediately obvious. But I'll pass on the question.

We will only rename accounts in exceptional circumstances - That tends to be reasons that involve legal or potentially legal issues.

We don't delete posting histories apart from where a post has broken the rules. Spammers are rule breakers from the outset so they get blasted from history.

But, our position is fairly simple. Publish and be damned. If you post then what you post goes into the Singletrack historical record. It's published and you can't unpublish it. We like to think this instills a little responsibility in the posting behaviour of our users (it's a faint hope).

Our t&cs state that you are giving us the right to use your posts as we see fit. We may decide to publish them in the mag if we think you have proffered awesome wisdom 🙂

But mostly the reason for not allowing all and sundry to have whatever they like removed is because it would totally screw up the readability of threads.

Remember kids, what you say today will be readable by people in 10/20/30+ years time 🙂

So, simply put. We don't change usernames and we don't delete posting histories except in exceptional circumstances. What is exceptional we will only ever decide when we are faced with making that decision so it's not anything I'm going to try and define here.

I'd say!

We will only rename accounts in exceptional circumstances - That tends to be reasons that involve legal or potentially legal issues

So your only hope is to get given a new identity by the Police who'll then force STW to change your user name......

So I'm stuck with Camo16... 🙁 ...when all I really want right now is to redefine my persona as a nihilistic type called Hugh Zarst.

I wish I had. I've ended up with a name that is universally misread.

Just stop using your account and start off with a new log-in. Lots of folk seem to manage it.

Could the op not just register a new account with a different email address and never ever use their old login again, because doing that would be very wrong. I know that wouldn't get rid of your forum history but what have you got to hide (also checks ops previous posts)

aye, rumour has it that the great hack was actually commissioned by TJ after a particularly vexatious helmet debate where he said a quite a few things he regretted. Burning the STW databases in their entirety was the only way to expunge the whole sordid affair from history...

DD - the problem with that approach is that your new log-in might be spotted as a duplicate and permanently banned. That's why I suggested contacting the mods first(worked for me)

Did you used to have an option of using a secondary username, or at least changing it yourself?

I know you can't now but I'm sure that used to be a feature of STW mkII

you could change username for a while but it was causing problems with impersonations so they stopped it.

"Rhino Tantrum" is an anagram of your original username - I'd have that

Just out of interest, why the change?

I noticed you were making no effort to hide your identity so assumed it wasn't meant as deliberate evasion.

Just fancied a change?

That. Mostly.

It also seemed that my sense of humour wasn't much appreciated (I think it's a written vs spoken word thing) and I might have upset a few folk. I thought a clean break and a resolution not to be so subtle in future would be worthwhile.

Dissapointing that you can't change your user name.

Back when I signed up with STW I seem to think that you entered your name and that was your username?

Remember, this was way before twitter and facespace and all that. Now I would not use my username as it is, but back then, it was different. I guess quite a few of us did the same thing.

Things have changed a lot. I'm just more aware of how things (no matter how trivial/innocent etc) can be easily found and thrown back at you in the future.

So, if I start spamming I can get my account deleted..?

Wow, some of you go way back.

I remember when we had to send an pigeon to STW Towers which your post on a scrap of paper round its leg and they'd have some poor northerner climb up a ladder and carve your letters into a slab of stone outside their office.

trouble with going down the 'ban me and delete all my posts' route is that they won't let you back with a new id.

I can't ever remember seeing a post published in the mag. Doesn't say much for our collective wisdom!!! 🙂

They used to do a 'posts of the months' section back in the day.

I got in it when Mike Tarrantino (sp? & 😉 ) was guest editor. My claim to stw fame.

Was your post awesomely wise, wwaswas?

I like to think it was about 1980s tube-mounted gear leverage...

I do have a couple of semi-legit claims to fame (ish). My history book is in paperback now and my fiction opus is available on Amazon Kindle... 😉

Knowledge of down tube gearage was commonplace in them days.

At risk of deviating away from the op, I remember Cressers so going back some way...

I've noted STW sometimes posts thread links to Twitter too, so not quite the same as appering in the mag.

Fred always seemed to manage it, so it must be possible. Unless of course, the Ubergruppenfuhrers have tightened camp security since then...

I managed it once, before I gave the game away, but if I told you how, I'd probably be banished into the outer wastelands where there be the wailing and screaming of the souls of the damned.

And also TJ.

I wonder why Singletrack would want to archive forum posts. In twenty years time they'll hardly be relevant, and there may not be a Singletrack magazine by then.

...who's been regularly posting on STW the longest then?

The great hack reset the counter for everyone and not everyone logged back on with the same names- what happened to Toolmaker for instance - seem to remember him being a regular in the top 10 most frequent posters list in the mag. Gone? or new posthack nomdeplume?

Think I first found the forum when issue one was available by the tills in bike shops - whenever that was. Back then there used to be a list on the left of the page of all the people who were logged in - I very much doubt theres room for that now. The internet was black and white then and used to get switched off at 9pm.
