Solely my opinion, of course, but if you can do it after 8 pints and a dodgy kebab it’s basically just a skilled way of passing the time.
^^ with reference to the 16-year-old dartist in the news.
a skilled way of passing the time.
= sport.
On that basis, cycling isn’t a sport. You can do it sitting down. And after 8 pints and a kebab in my experience
but if you can do it after 8 pints and a dodgy kebab it’s basically just a skilled way of passing the time.
I could still ride my bike after 8 pints and a dodgy kebab! 🙂

Chunder-cross is not UCI approved.
Okay okay, I thought I could head this one off before it turned into the e-bike thread but failed on two counts.
First, e-bike thread mentioned above.
Second, I had to go look up a definition of sport:
“an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
And realise the physical exertion bit is missing from darts. So it’s a game? And I’ve walked into a game about e-bikes. I’m going now. Bye.
I'm with you.
If you can do it in your jeans and you don't sweat through exertion it's no sport.
But then again most of my bimblings (on a bike, in the river, up a mountain) are not a sport either because I'm neither doing it competitively or training to do it competitively.
Pastimes are great. Don't do down pastimes by trying to pass them off as crap sports.
An aside - that 16 year old. I spend too much time around 16 year olds (teacher) and none of them look like that lad. He's 16 going on about 35.
Hmmm isn’t it the same as snooker.

Agree with this. Golf, also not sport.
Edit, yes and Snooker.
Hmmm isn’t it the same as snooker.
Agreed - another fine passtime.
Anything that can generate tons of money on the telly box/streaming platforms so playing computer games as well.
Hmmm isn’t it the same as snooker.
Yes - not much effort required to be OK at it - but years of practice needed to become excellent at it.

Agreed he doesn't make a good advert for the health benefits of darts!
Anything where a performance needs to be judged and not measured isn't a sport. It's art.
See; Ice dancing, synchronised swimming, diving etc
I would say it is a game, as is snooker, as is chess. All played competitively and require skill. Can't see why that is a problem.
Who cares whether or not it's a sport. Does it matter?
Hmmm isn’t it the same as snooker.
The problem I have with darts (they don't let you drink beer these days do they?) is that it's only about your skill - nothing you do affects your opponent. However this is not the case with snooker, which is why I prefer it.

Oh, you mean e-sports! 😄
nothing you do affects your opponent.
Maybe not physically but a lot of top level sport is in the head and they can definitely influence each other in that; playing faster, playing slower, getting in each other's eyeline, all been done.
Littler was at it last night. Miles ahead in one leg and on 170 he hit two 60's and then 'asked the crowd' whether he should go for the bull. Really wound Dolan up, and took him 2 sets to recover.
Andy Fordham use to wear trainers. It must be a sport 🎯
If darts isn't a sport, not is fishing, curling, shooting, dressage, bowls and others.

Correct.
And if you add the Scrotes' factor too you can knock out surfing and playboat kayaking. All that half pipe BMX/skate/snowboard nonsense too. And Redbull rampage. Ski jumping is on the cusp with it's funky scoring.
I'm no horsist, but I think you could make a bit of a case that dressage is a bit physical (for the human), but the Scrotes' ruling thankfully knocks it out anyway. I guess it sits in the same category as sheep dog trials or circus animal skills.

Because some people just like to feel superior to others.
So by the logic that if the result is dependant on the opinion of a judge or referee it's not a sport then boxing is a sport if you knock your opponent out but not a sport if you win on points
Had this conversation a few times with mates and at work. I’m firmly with the OP and would add golf, crown green and ten pin bowling and snooker in to the mix. Basically anything that involves dressing up posher than you’d normally dress or doesn’t involve physical exertion.
Maybe not physically but a lot of top level sport is in the head and they can definitely influence each other in that
Personally that does not do it for me.
Second, I had to go look up a definition of sport:

Therefore time trial is not a sport
I think boxing loses out for no other reason than having 4 world champions per category at the same time and the current champion getting to pick who gets to challenge for their crown most of the time before you get close to how it's scored. I'd pop it in the same category as WWE but the actings better.
Boxing is an utter travesty nowadays. Everyone builds up to be champ by fighting opponents clearly a lot less skilled than they are. Then avoid fighting anyone remotely at the same skill level whilst pretending they’re US wrestlers by staring at each other and making vague threats. Sad state of affairs.
Therefore time trial is not a sport
You're still competing in a time trial, DH racing etc
I’m sure that as the dartists are competing for half a million quid in prize money, they couldn’t give a toss whether you define it as a sport or not
That’s a nice payday for a pastime
If judges involved, at least we can all agree that things like Rampage are not sports.
they couldn’t give a toss
I see what you did there.....
And out of.curiosity, if I wanted to follow the darts coverage, can anyone recommend a website?
most people would class cricket as a sport, yet you can do 90% of that without sweating at all. Similarly bowls.
If you can do it in your jeans and you don’t sweat through exertion it’s no sport.
I agree with this. Succinctly put!
Most of the present Manchester United squad don’t look like they break a sweat for 90 minutes and most look like they’ve just had 8 pints and a kebab

I was going to mention cricket but feared the wrath of big hitters who may like it. I’m torn though as I’ve seen people break a sweat whilst playing it.
Maybe not a sport in some folks eyes, but that lad may have a tough time getting back into the swing of school when goes back (assuming he is)

Got to keep up with the pie and Elizabeth Duke jewellery payments.
I’ve seen people break a sweat whilst playing it.

I did see a facebook post earlier about the 16yo that made me laugh, about what the midwife said when he was born - "Congratulations, it's a man" 😂

Point of order, surely you play darts while consuming 8 pints, and prior to eating a dodgy kebab?
If you've been getting shit-faced, then gorging yourself on elephant foot shavings in pitta Before playing darts, no wonder You're bitter about it you've gone and handicapped yourself.
I feel the same about Golf, it's not a real sport mostly because I have zero ability to play it.
