Says privileged white guy on middle class forum.
Is this a middle class forum 😱🧟♂️
Is this a middle class forum
Yes, and you forgot the 'whiny cockbags' bit.
It was a stupid thing to do, innocent though it may have been.
As for Roger Moore, that is sad. Just didn't see it coming.
black humour
Careful now...
What an absolute idiot still at least it's got rid of him, I've never understood why he was even popular.

Even after 2 years?

Leave Rog out of this.

did he post this during one of his drunken Twitter evenings?
the picture was ill judged without the racist connotations. incredibly naive in today's world. quite right that BBC (who I am not a big fan of) have canned him. how could they not?
My mum used to call me a cheeky little monkey when I was little.
Makes you think...
I guess he can back to Daz adverts now.
Royals = performing animals, that was my take. Not that funny, but that’s it.
Agreed. Also if you used to listen to his radio show he's been doing chimps dressed as famous people for ages.
That said, it was a bit silly given the possible interpretations.
Plenty of racists know that MM is mixed race, and because of that you get this:
Mail Racists being Racists Shocker
BBC haven't updated the schedules yet. I wonder which radio equivalent of magnolia paint they will offer. If it is Chiles I will stage a dirty protest in the Blue Peter garden.
I’m just chuffed to bits that I’m suddenly middle class.
What is all this pish about how no-one could think or notice that a joke about a mixed race person involving comparisons to a chimp might be a bit racist?
For those who can't see the problem. Any comment on Rosanne Rarrs tweet about Valerie Jarret?

That cost her her career, but at least she admitted that what she said was offensive and told people to stop defending her (even if she claimed she didn't mean it that way, and blamed sleeping tablets).
I'd say that both Danny Bakers tweet and apology were worse.
I don't like it when people jump in the offense bandwagon.
When they get pissed about "offense" to their religion or politics, they can jog on.
But this is racism, not "perlicital kerreknese gernded maaaaaaad!".
Any comment on Rosanne Rarrs tweet about Valerie Jarret?
Yeah - who? and who? and what?
I'm so confused.
Is this guy not racist, racist or double racist?

Thread won.
Perchy, he is the square root of an imaginary racist.
It's hard to explain, right now he isn't, but, if you multiply him with himself, he instantly becomes more racist than you can possibly imagine.

I think that once its pointed out, its obvious it can be seen as racist. But unless you are a racist yourself, or have suffered from racism, its not immediately obvious.
So the guy has (apparently inadvertently) caused offence and apologised. What more does STW want?

but he didnt though he said that anyone who saw racism in his tweet had a 'disseased mind' which really pissed off those who have suffered from racism
its possible*, if he'd just left a sincere appology he could have waethered it out
*maybe, he did break the BBC guidelines
Implying that the child of a mixed race mother is a monkey is clearly racist, how can anyone suggest otherwise?
Whether Danny Baker is a racist is another matter but that doesn't takeaway the fact that what he posted was racist.
Am I offended - no but then I am not offended by very much. It is still wrong though.
You can take the boy out of south london, but can you take south london out of the boy ?
Disappointed
I started in the camp of "what he did was misjudged but not racist"; but reading the thread we do have a bit of a 'it didn't offend me, therefore it's OK' vibe. Sooo... on balance I can see why the BBC sacked him.
The BBC is now leading with it as its top story on the radio news, clearly desperate to show that it did the right thing.
More annoying is the doorstep haranguing of him, and this culture of "WHY haven't you apologised MORE?!! WHY haven't you burned down your house and all your possessions to show how REALLY sorry you are? WHY??!!".
What happened to "employee misjudges badly, has to be fired, here's why, he's apologised, let's move on"?
it's the 2nd time he's been sacked from the BBC.
He got sacked in the 90's after he was offensive about referees on 606.
606 was brilliant then, absolutely original and has never been close since. Just another boring football phone in.
I am not surprised he's been sacked but I don't think he has a racist bone in his body.

yip.

Fair enough - if he said that he's a complete idiot, (should have gone for the sincere apology approach)
now if only sean keaveny would say something offensive this afternoon and get sacked it'll be a good day all round.
Another here who didn’t make a race connection. Even after reading the first few posts of ‘how did he think people would react?’ I was still assuming it was just royalist outrage.
Royals = performing animals, that was my take. Not that funny, but that’s it.
Same, and I didn't see "monkey" and therefore a racist insult, I just saw a chimp and old timey photo, not really getting the reference but thinking a dig at the royals and performing animals or something like that.
But then I'm a bit clueless about racist insults. I just see people and surprised when someone makes an insult or just even a reference to the fact person A is different to person B.
I didn't even realise the word monkey was used as an insult until a few years back when there was some thing in the news about people making monkey noises at football games. Sad that people are making those insults but you can understand some are just unaware of it or why you'd even want to insult someone over the colour of their skin or other differences.
With hindsight, yeah what DB has done is out of order but I can accept it wasn't a malicious intent. Not bothered about him getting fired as not a fan really, but wouldn't personally have been outraged and calling for him to be fired either.

Implying that the child of a mixed race mother is a monkey is clearly racist, if the implication is made because it is the child of a mixed race mother.
Implying the child of a mixed race mother is a monkey, because they are the member of the Royal Family & without considering the race of its mother at any point, may be thoughtless but isn't racist.
Hoping Liz Kershaw will resign from R6 in protest.

That requires you consciously or even subconsciously acknowledging that Meghan Markle is of mixed race. When I think of her (that sounds creepy!) her racial heritage is very low down on the things that cross my mind. I have just come out of a class I've taught and in it there were two Chinese, one Italian, one Syrian and one Danish student along with a host of white caucasian British students. It did not cross my mind once - I've had to think hard about it in order to write this down now. I think of them as a dozen individuals and I remember them by they names and personalities. Is it possible to get to the point of racial blindness that you have to force yourself to think about it in order to not cause unintentional offence as a by product of people thinking and looking for offence where it was not meant. I guess so.
she is as much white as black - The joke came across as intended. The Royals are a circus show
From someone who doesn't know who Danny Baker is, or his links to calling the royals a circus show, that came across as racist. Might have been different had they been dressed in clowns clothing.
It was very easily interpreted one of two ways. Poor choice, and most likely in breech of contract.
Are we SURE that Steve Wright hasn’t liked his tweet or something. Can someone check please?
How is that man still broadcasting?
Implying that the child of a mixed race mother is a monkey is clearly racist, if the implication is made because it is the child of a mixed race mother.
Nobody can know what Baker was implying, which is why posting that image is racist even if he is not deliberately being racist.
I am also sure that Baker knows Megan is mixed race (as it has been in the media a fair amount for a year or two) so that connotation not crossing his mind is surprising to say the least.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA...
Oh .. you were serious?
Clearly Wet Wet Wet were, wrong its not just love all around us.
Dezb, google is your friend, unless you were just being obtuse?
I agree that the relevance of a story about someone comparing a mixed race person to an ape, in a thread about someone comparing a mixed race person to an ape might have gone over your head so for clarity. Its a reference to a story about someone comparing a mixed race person to an ape. (and the aftermath).
Does that help?
‘disseased mind’
Personally, I think he was spot on with this. Anyone who sees a chimp and thinks "black person" is twisted.
Where is everyone getting "monkey" from anyway? It's clearly a chimp. Unless you're saying that simians all look alike, which is species-ist?
chimpanzeeist the lot of them

if only we could all live in such an innocent world [sighs wistfully]
I didn’t even realise the word monkey was used as an insult until a few years back when there was some thing in the news about people making monkey noises at football games.
Of course, re-reading what I just said there, someone like DB should be more aware of this with his football background.
Still though, like said, I saw chimp, not monkey, and didn't cross my mind.
in a thread about someone comparing a mixed race person to an ape
What, this one? Who's being obtuse now?
