Ads are a weird phenomenon on here (well loads of other places too, I suppose) - they're used as some kind of incentive/punishment. Subscribe or we fill your screen with all this crap you don't want to see. Surely if adverts actually had a purpose other than that, they'd be something people wanted to see. The only interaction with ads for nearly everyone is to ignore them, delete them, hide them, skip them. So nothing "advertised" gets bought due to the advert (I will make it a point NOT to buy something that has a particularly intrusive or annoying advert).  I find it quite bizarre.

I often wonder how many first time visitors have been quickly turned away having tried the site and found the non-subscriber experience a bit clumsy.

A calculated business decision I suppose.

Using the Ecosia browser really cleans up the internet, and it's carbon negative so helps fight climate change too.

If you've already found a browser that runs STW OK then you can still use Ecosia and contribute to planting trees. It's all explained on ecosia.org

I use Ecosia in Brave for this site. Lots of other combinations possible.

I uninstalled Brave a while ago.  I don't trust it/them.

Ecosia looks interesting, that's a new one on me.

Hello. nbt and I have moved onto tandems. Just got a 'Samedi moustache' (mtb tandem), which will probably be used more for gravel on tours.

All of them bar the forum sponsor - currently Saracen - and the odd STW specific banner like the one below. ⇩⇩

If by normal you mean rigid single speed then no.

😉

The closest i get to a bike these days is looking at my cove hummer fitted with bafang motor gathering dust in corner of bedroom. Will have see about selling it whilst I’m still able to.

Honestly, the possibility of finding anything online without ads is close to impossible, and many sites either only allow a small number of views per month before you have to pay, or you get a ‘pay up now’ banner that blocks everyone.

The fact that people on here keep whining about coughing up a few quid a year to keep the operation running after years of it being pointed out that the ads help keep the site operating quite beggars belief, frankly.
Either cough up or suck it up.

If only there was a third option……

Oh wait there is, and it’s the one that impacts the business the most but is really hard to quantify.  Best to assume it isn’t there then, eh?
