I came across this word today and realised it describes me perfectly. I don’t have a sense of entitlement, but it seems in my late 40’s and having recently turned 50, I’ve turned into a grumpy, moaning git unable to enjoy much. All the current political issues, managing 2 kids, cost of living etc then the House insurance renewal arrived today with a 34% increase just set me off again. It seems a relentless barrage upon my fortitude.
Yes I know, I’m lucky to be alive etc but jeez it seems hard work at the moment. Time to retirement sitting in a remote quiet garden in ignorance seems very far away if not impossible with the interim period feeling like an unimaginable 10+ year trial.
Anyway it’s not just me, I know it’s not…
I'm trying to come to terms with a 50 year old just having come across the word "curmudgeon".
I didn’t say “just” implying “for the first time”.
I like the term contrarian and how it has been urbanised to perfectly describe how some of the threads on here evolve. "I like that indie music". Contrarian: "Yeah but they're not really that indie"
I didn’t say “just” implying “for the first time”.
No need to be grumpy about it.
Er, oh.
I didn’t say “just” implying “for the first time”
Oh, OK. In that case just accept my deepest sympathy that your home insurers have offered you an inflated quote for renewal, and I hope you feel better soon.
I like the term contrarian
I probably qualify for at least this and probably the OPs curmudgeonliness also.
I think, fundamentally, I'm sick to my toenails that we've evolved into a society that questions nothing and just absorbs everything we're presented with as fact. I've been accused of being, well, many things on the forum over the years but ultimately I'm just trying to go "are you sure?" (though admittedly sometimes in a less than diplomatic fashion).
Random example: I used to see it time and again on an anti-brexit group on Facebook. They were the bastions of truth, spending hours debunking leaver propaganda and bemoaning the intellectual proletariat for not doing basic fact-checking... right up until something was posted which aligned with their views and then they mostly just sucked it up and were as shocked and outraged as your average Daily Express reader. Why? Stop it.
It's insanity of the highest order, we live in unprecedented times where almost all of us have the breadth of the world's knowledge literally at our fingertips and yet it's too much like hard work for us to spend ten seconds googling before hitting Send.

having negotiated the transition from angry young man to curmudgeonly grump, apparently without any intervening period between the two, I think I'm now actually emerging the other side, into past caring. So you've that to look forward to.
Hi fives curmudgeonly brother. Hoping to get through it soon as it's zero fun
I’ve turned into a grumpy, moaning git unable to enjoy much.
research would suggest you were always a grumpy ol' sod.

A surly teenager with grey hair, basically.

Sounds like my 53 years on the planet. Probably wasn't angry enough at the right things in my youth maybe.
