Hi

Staying there for one night with work. I only have the road bike I’m afraid. Looking for a 20 mile loop with some quiet hills if possible please.

thanks in advance

Mike

A bit of a classic would be to take the lanes East from Crickhowell via Llanbedr to Stanton then head North over the Gospel Pass to Hay-on-Wye then loop West and South via Talgarth and Llangorse to Bwlch then drop down to the Brecon & Mon canal and follow the lane back to Crickhowell. Scenic route, quiet roads and the rather strenuous climb over Gospel Pass,

Hammy,

There are a few options depending on how hilly you want.

My suggestion is to do a circuit around the SugarLoaf on quiet roads. Take Standard St from the middle of Crick’, bearing broadly E towards Forest Coal Pit. First bit is steep (12%) but after that it’s quiet country lanes with the odd tractor and a bit of sheep shit.

Bear right around Forest Coal Pit towards Bettws and Pantygelli (good pub here), thread through Abergavenny and over river to Llanfoist. Coast back to Crick via Govilon and Gilwern on flattish/rolling quietish B road (2-3 cars per min).

You could extend the ride by turning up towards the Tumble (iconic climb) at Govilon or even at Llangattock, up Llangynidr Mtn.

Depending on when they cut the hedges, could be a bit thorny.

For quiet roads I’d head over the river at Crick and take the road to Llangynidr to Tallybont and then go up to the reservoir and head up past. You can add loops from Llangyndir towards Beaufort and back down to Llangattick for some extra hills.

Although (as above) heading out to Forest coal pit is also very quiet.

If you follow bonni's route don't take the A4077 Crickhowell Road between Gilwern and Crickhowell as it has very poor sight lines (trees and stone walls making most of the corners blind) and is used as a ractrack.  You'll be safer taking Glangrwyney road and either heading along the A40 (busy but great sightlines and plenty of places for cars to overtake) or looping up the quiet lanes towards Llangenny and then dropping into Crickhowell down Llangenny Lane.
