I've read in a few forums recently the many claimed benefits of coconut oil including improved skin and hair appearance, increased immunity against colds and virus', weight loss, etc. Does anyone have any experience of using this and if so what improvements did you see or is it just another fad product on the market?

Afaik it contains medium chain triglycerides which are the amazing fats that your body burns as well as carbs without any messing around with insulin... so it could be great energy food.

Supposedly anyway, like so many of these things it seems to be mostly a theory rather than a verified fact.

My other half uses it all the time as she's into paleo and crossfit. I don't care for either of those things but have started using coconut oil all the time as it tastes really good on most stuff. Really nice for steaks, chicken breast, gammon loads of things. It burns really hot too. It is a bit pricey though.

A far better natural choice than the industrially produced seed oils, so yes it's "in".

A fair few people with thyroid (and other related/endocrine issues) swear it makes a big difference to their well-being.

We use it in a few dishes, mainly coconut-oriented stir fries a la Mr Sisson. Substitute breadcrumbs (e.g. shallow frying chicken, prawns, pork fillet) for dessicated coconut, normal oil for coconut oil and you're onto a flavour winner.

Mrs TT mixes it with cocoa butter and shea butter and uses it as a moisturiser. Works a treat, properly natural-not-tested-on-animals, no artificial ingredients and makes her smell slightly chocolatey, which is no bad thing.

Did you even think about that statement before you posted it? All seed oils are the product on an "industrial" process and no less "natural" as a consequence.

I seriously doubt that this is anything other than marketing.

I know someone who has high cholesterol who was told to avoid coconut oil because of the tri-glycerides in it. Not qualified to comment on the accuracy of this though.

Maybe it helps the swallows achieve optimum velocity once encumbered?

A roadie friend of mine swears by it - she will drink a can of coconut milk when an energy boost is needed on a long ride. But I gather that not all coconut oil is equal, can't remember why though.
