Fricken stupid bugs, usually loads about, but I didn't see many last year (IIRC it wasn't even May when I did see them), not seen any so far any this year

A Mayfly is a different beastie. It an aquatic insect wot fly fishy folk copy to catch fishies.
Cockchafers are cool. As long as they don’t get down ya pants.
We used to call them May bugs when I was at school.

I thought they gobble up old wood but a quick google suggests that's something else

They have a 5 year life cycle, as flying bugs they only live a few days. So, you won’t see them every year.
