Clothing for a man ...

Clothing for a man of "a certain age"

So does everyone else in the entire universe.

You must know that's just not the case? Many folk have to dress in a certain way in order to fit in with their employment and when you're outside of work then there are still "expectations", sometimes derived from convention and sometimes from the pressure of being part of a social "clan". It's true that we all react to these pressures in different ways but they still exist and still influence clothing choices.

the Spanish subtitles have nothing to do with it BTW...

The point that Mirranda makes is that we're all of us, in the 21st century driven consciously or unconsciously by a massive fashion industry whether we like it or not. Anyone proclaiming that they are the height of fashion, or that that they have no fashion (an equal choice) or in fact that they are an individual is delusional.

A professor of archaeology once suggested to me that future archaeologists will presume that the tribe who live in Europe from Western Russia all the way to the British Isles were one homogenous group becasue of Ikea furniture, Heineken beer and Levis

Folk do dress in clans for sure -the red trouser lot, the aging rockers still wearing band t shirts from the 90s to say nothing of those still trying to look like they did 30 years ago when they were cool 🙂

Clothing gives a lot of clues as to the tribe you are in.  some of these are more obvious than others

I got me one of these jumpers:

https://www.asphalte.com/en-US/h/products/the-perfect-jumper?variant=39756153520222

Honestly, it's the best piece of clothing I've got.

OK, you have to wait about 3 months for it to arrive, but heck, it's worth the wait.

I'm going to get more of their stuff.

I'm doing a speech to politicians shortly - I have no idea how to dress.  Jeans and a sports jacket was suggested.  I nearly had a conniption 🙂

Thank you @nickc. I now know how Montane arrived at the colour of my favourite running cap 😁

I used to think Montane just had a bin of colour swatches and they blindfolded an intern who fished them out. Then I watched the devil wears Prada and it all clicked into place 🤣

-the red trouser lot

The red trouser site was closed down becasue the "targets" started to make sure they'd get photo'd wearing them to end up on the site. There was a competition  in some Army regiments to see how many shots they could get of themselves on the site

+ 1 on Spoke for trousers - easy to get fit that is bang on, comfy and seem to last well. Overshirts from likes of Frahm - I have a couple. Some nice polo shirts, I have a couple from Rapha and Rohan. For business casual, usually Spoke trousers, a well fitted proper shirt (I like M&S) and a blazer type jacket - I have a couple from Next i think. More often though I wear a suit (Slaters - i have 4) and open necked shirt - looks smarter in pretty much all work related situations that I am in. Oh, and smart leather shoes, black or brown, I get mine in M&S as they fit me well.

tj, for your upcoming talk - black lederhosen, knee length socks, shiny shoes, properly ironed white shirt; that should get the politicians' interest...

Alternatively, your tartan suit complete with tam.

Why not ?? That's what I'd wear with a shirt... and smart trainers.
Obviously this time of year you'd want a shirt or something as well.
If it seemed like an event to dress up I might wear some dark chino's and a semi matching supermarket shirt.

For a bit of mischief I'll illustrate with a photo of a "serious work event" - only Boris is wearing a suit.
Look to the back and what people are wearing for work at number 10.

Cheese and Wine

You were completely comfortable wearing outdoor clothing for years ... if this is an important presentation then it's more important you feel comfortable wearing whatever you wear than stand there thinking "is this me"?

That was what I wore at Uni sometimes. Drainpipe jeans with big turnups to blend in with all the punks. I was a skinny bastard back then, but I still have a sports jacket from that era that kind of fits.

Have a look at Community Clothing. British made, we should support that. Also lot sof womed like to see a man dress in asmart suit when they are deressed up.woth the investment, if youre not loaded, you'll likely have to go outsdie UK manufacture to gte a decent price though.

why is it called a sports jacket when it's clearly unsuited for any sort of sport?

For someone who claims to be immune to marketing you're letting yourself be massively influenced by how one person dresses 🤣

Your now in your autumnal years so watch a few episodes of still game and go for the brown shades but not light shaded Chinos in case you have a leaky tap , you may end up with a shaded isle of man design showing on your front

What about a gimp suit, they're popular with men of a certain age and I suspect your audience will relate too 🤣

I don't get the no jeans thing. I am "only" 53 but I think I rock in 511s or even 513s. But that's probably the problem, I think I rock. 🙂

My kids and wife agree though, but are they just being kind?

I see so many lazily / badly dressed men in jeans with the "Clarkson" look that it has totally put me off.  I last wore jeans in the 80s.

These posts appear at different times since STW became a thing , my forum name dates back to those times when we could get big group rides even a feature in the mag . My get up then was hoodies , skate shoes JEANS all with an MTB themed crossover ( if you know you know 😉)
Guess what? I'm now 67 , I'm not wearing elasticated waistband slacks and cardies with Werther's stuffed in the pockets just a slight variation on the same theme and guess what I don't care if people think I'm mutton dressed as who the f@@@ cares ! It's true once you reach 60 you become invisible anyway so it really doesn't matter .
I did get the Crocs thing wrong though , I ripped into a mate who started wearing them a few years ago and now they seem to have crossed the generations , yoofs wearing them saying they are soooo comfy ! 🙄🙄🙄

You've got quite the obsession with Clarkson. Given the oblong shape of his body, I think he looks a bit weird in anything he wears. I don't tend to look at men, I will confess. But if I did, I don't think Clarkson would spring to mind.

Extrapolating this to everyone of a certain age is a bit surprising. Some people of a certain age may look silly in jeans, some might not.

But even that is totally subjective anyway.

Who is protesting?

I see people trying to help, which is the entire point of your thread.

It may well be that you look horrific in jeans, and I am sorry to hear that 🙂

Do you have any women around you who could advise you? They are usually quite good at this stuff.

As for giggles, if that makes you laugh then I suppose it's good news in a way but I find that rather sad if you rely on people helping you to create the most hilarity you've had for a while.

Two sources of hilarity - the deliberately funny posts some of which are hilarious and some of the inadvertently funny ones.

A few genuinely helpful ones as well which have been taken on board

It was obvious from my previous conversations on here that this would end up being pretty silly

This post from badlywired dog is brilliant and sums it up so well

In this week’s episode of Fashion Carnage TV, the denizens of an online cycling forum pool their ideas to spruce up TJ, a man ‘of a certain age’ who has recently emerged from the sale aisle of Mountain Warehouse, but is desperate for change.

TJ’s longstanding aversion to denim jeans makes him a tough proposition for a bunch of middle-aged wannabe fashionistas who wear little else and suggestions range from off-the-peg, Springsteen-style workwear through to made-to-measure Thai silk pajama suits via classic black leather jackets teamed with second-hand tartan trews.

Will TJ soar high like a majestic moleskin butterfly or stagger from the fitting room in ripped jeans teamed with a tweed sports jacket? Will he come to regret his unfathomable decision to seek fashion advice from a bunch of middle-aged cycling tramps? One thing’s certain, we can’t wait for the big reveal!!

You make this point a lot but Clarkson's not the only person wearing any of the items of clothing he wears. Nothing he wears is a bad piece of clothing, He wears clothes badly - if there are people who look badly dressed wearing similar clothes its becuase they wear them badly too- it's not the fault of the clothes. Its his whole schtick really - he's the butt of his own joke things go wrong when he does them, things are supposed to look stupid when he does them, but its the him doing them thats point.

He wears socks - I presume you abstain from them too?

True. It is entirely possible that the key reason for that is that you're the common denominator of said conversations.
