Unfortunately we're not people who enjoy lung fulls of fire/bbq smoke, and often need to shut windows in hot weather and struggle to cool an already overheating house.

Slightly confused on potential solutions and which would cool and filter out the smell and nasty particulates.

Sounds like PIV and MVHR draw in air from outside and wouldn't remove the smell? Is full on air-con the only solution, and is that achieved well by use of an air to air heat pump (better filtration??)

The idea of getting off gas, installing solar panels which would offset air-con use of a2a heat pump does appeal. But no grant for a2a heat pumps (yet) and I imagine the cost will be thousands, tens of thousands?

external shutters and blinds sounds like a solution that fits your needs.

Open windows to cool a house in hot weather is rarely the answer.

Thanks trail_rat, I understand your point but I've explored and exhausted that area of research.

The point about opening windows is to cool the house down when the temperature outside is less than it is inside. However often this will coincide with neighbourhood fires.

Hence, looking at air-con type options.

Interesting point - sure I read in the Guardian this week that grants are coming for a2a heatpumps that can also act as air conditioning units. And am I right in thinking that these are basically ductless air conditioning type units that you stick up on your wall?
