Hi,
I’m currently abroad and trying to limit my (post-Brexit) data usage by casting from iPad to a Chromecast. Tried it last night and it was still using quite a bit of data.
Any ideas on how to cast on a local network without using data? I did switch off the data roaming on my MiFi router but it stopped playing the programme shortly afterwards.
I’ve got loads of Netflix downloaded to my iPad and just want to cast it to the TV.
TIA
I know nothing about ipads, but if it was Android I'd "mirror" rather than cast.
How much data did it use like that? It might be a netflix issue not a chromecast one: netflix app doesn't tell the chromecast to use a local copy so the chromecast goes looking online for it. That's a guess though.
Ignore me, I missed the "Netflix" bit - Could be a problem due to location, I know you cant always get the same programmes in other countries, maybe this applies to downloaded too - just guessing.
I used to have a Chromecast audio and IIRC it didn't send data from the device to the Chromecast - rather, it told the Chromecast what to stream, and the Chromecast would then stream it from the internet. So it used just as much data either way.
I’ll try to mirror rather than cast then update.
Cheers
Are both your iPad and ChromeCast connected to the same local WiFi network? If you are just using your iPad on 4G or 5G MiFi while roaming then you will be stuck with paying for MiFi data won't you?
Your device is acting as the 'remote' for the Chromecast -the fact you've got them downloaded locally on the device unfortunately doesn't help, the Chromecast will try to get the content straight from Netflix's servers, it doesn't care what's on your device.
As above, you need to mirror, which unfortunately will probably lead to crappy choppy frame rates but it's the best you can hope for.
