I bought my Missus an Asus somethingorother for Christmas, She thinks it's great. She is also the most technophobe person I know.
Finally replaced my 8 year old Acer. It was still fine, booting up OK, no viruses, still 8 hours of battery life, but the hinges were getting a bit floppy (needed propping open eventually) and the screen was scratched up, and replaced it with...Another Acer. Full HD and 14" all for £269 price matched at PC World, I don't know why you'd want a "proper" laptop at home anymore.
Oh, and as everything is stored on the cloud, I just opened up my new chromebook, entered my acct and password, and carried on where I'd left off.
Sell a lot of these to schools

I have an Acer. 4gb ram, full hd 14" screen.
I've had Chromebooks for about 6 years now. No issues at all, unless you need to do things like burn OS images for Raspberry Pi's etc
I use mine mainly from browsing the mincernet and it's great.
