MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Just had a curious little glance on the coronavirus worldometer site thingy.....China seem to have all but eradicated coronavirus! 17 cases today, 11 yesterday. Since early March broadly speaking, they've had hardly any cases or deaths. So, what's the deal with all that then? I'm not really one for conspiracy theories, but their figures seem at odds with basically every other nation in the world! On the flip side, I'd have expected more media coverage (even with their strict controls on free press) if they were blatantly covering up cases/deaths to the extent that the figures suggest.....

Are they not inline with other countries that have used similar strict control measures to contain and starve outbreaks? How many cases in South Korea?
I was wondering how they were doing too.
I suspect it's one of the few benefits to having a huge authoritarian regime in control of the country.
Ok, ok, we have an authoritarian regime too, but not in the same way and ours is a bit sh*t.
Basically democracy just wasn't built for this BUT some functioning democracies have still done superbly. So it comes down to our sh*t government again, exceptionalism and decades of undermining what society is meant to actually mean. Hence just wearing a mask has become a battle.
With a population of 1.3Bn and around 4000 deaths, they've managed it far better than any other country I can think of. Remarkable given they had no notice as it originated there.
Even New Zealand, considered to be pretty much the Gold Standard for Covid management lost a higher proportion of their population than China did. (I think)
Difficult to know really. Chine are not renowned for openness and honesty and they had several goes at trying to deny it was even a thing at the beginning, how many were really affected and where the virus had spread. So, not a conspiracy theory, just experience of knowing that they systematically lie and hide things. They may well have lower cases than anywhere else but I have reservations about the precise numbers.
I always think that the China figures are hard to believe. However, from the folks I know who live there - I can promise you that we have seen nothing compared to the lockdown they imposed there. They really stopped people travelling and going out - and in a very abrupt manner.
So, in my very uneducated opinion, they did manage the situation extremely effectively.
It was really incredibly remarkable, if you bear in mind that the virus kicked off just before Chinese New Yea. For anyone who hasn’t been there or experienced Chinese New Year - it’s like Christmas, Easter and new year all combined in any western country. I’m not certain, but I believe it’s the largest annual movement of people anywhere in the world. So the fact that China completely cancelled new year and no one travelled to their home town totally beggars belief. There would be no chance of achieving that in any democratic country.
The plus side seems to be that they effectively halted the spread of the virus.
Its now the Chinese October national hols and the Chinese appear to be indulging in Covid 19 "revenge" tourism. Will be interesting to see how that works out for them in 2-3 weeks time.
I think it's probably about 50% being essentially a dictatorship with a population that doesn't object too much when you literally lock them in their homes, and 50% just making shit up. But say what you like about fascists, they do get shit done- ww2 would have gone very different for us if we'd not had Stalin, for all he was an evil scumbag. And the Chinese government is spectacularly pragmatic these days, so there was none of the popular western capitalist horseshit about halfmeasures and delays and trying to do the least possible and whatnot, they went "Look, a problem- let's absolutely destroy it without worrying about collateral"
I think we'll probably not know for about a decade exactly how it really went down though.
I’m sure plenty of the lunatics on the Coronavirus thread would like us to be more like China.

A friend has just gone out there to work. Their idea of what quarantine on entering the country means is VERY different to ours. Held in a government run hotel, in a single room. Food delivered to his door that he was not allowed to open whilst the delivery team were still in the corridor, frequent testing and texts to tell him when to be stood in his room ready to be escorted out at the end of his two weeks to be met by a team in hazmats.
If they have been able to be that ruthless in other ways they always stood a better chance than us.

Yup. We've talked about quarantine, and lockdowns, and we've never done either.

Fixed.😉
If only they had been as ruthless as soon as the warnings were raised, rather than trying to cover it up. If they had we wouldn't have a million dead and the world in turmoil.
There seems to be a rather worrying enthusiasm for ruthlessness, presumably the proponents assume that it won't be used against them, but only against the non-compliant awkward types. I'm sure Cummings and co will be only too delighted to ratchet-up the controls.
^^ Absolutely agree.
