Looking for a pub near the Mendips to meet the family post-ride on Sunday. One with a playground would be good. A garden where we can see the bikes/plant them next to us also a plus.
Any ideas?
On list so far: Castle of Comfort, Ship and Castle (Congesbury)
Discounted: Crown, Swan @Rowberrow (both nice pubs but playground makes such a difference)
Food is amazing at the Ship and Castle. They have recently introduced a really decent mezze menu.
Queen Vic in Priddy. The play garden is small but wood-chipped and has a very nice climbing/Wendy castle thing with a slide and a wobbly plank bridge. The pub itself is classic Mendip stone, is friendly to visitors and its food is locally sourced, as is the cider and ale. There are indoor and outdoor benches.
The nearest legal riding is some singletrack/double-track in Stockhill Wood, about 2 miles east.
Thanks very much guys. Will decide which one to choose based on how the Mrs feels about navigating to Priddy!
Is Priddy to Westbury Beacon/Stoke Woods/Draycott Sleights/Cheddar bridleway navigable? Looks interesting on the map - which usually means annoying my riding mates by dragging them through mud, cow shit, nettles and impossible climbs.
"mud, cow shit, nettles and impossible climbs"
Would seem to sum-up any attempt to track across Westbury Beacon ๐ Take the back roads to/from Draycott Sleights instead.
If you are in the vicinity of Cheddar early-ish/late-ish, why not ride down the excellent Gorge-top bridleway for shts and giggles? If you don't mind slinging your bike over a fence or two, you can ride to the Gorge-top easily via a gravely farm track/FP, rather than push up the impossible rocky bridleway. Look at Google maps satellite view to see where.
Cheers Buzz - I've been warned!
Might be there a bit late to avoid the gorge crowds. But I've never done that bit - previously got down to Cheddar on the track from Tynings farm past the mini racetrack. Will file it for future reference.
