Not wool, but warm enough and only £6.

(dhb/wiggle also have merino coks for £12 if you want to get fancy)

Oo tricky merino are great. I've worn mine out so hoping their weekend deal is a good un to replace them. I'd buy a truck load if they did the red/black stripes again!

On One/PX are great if you have a toddler to give them too after 1 wash. We got 2 3-packs and only have 1 pair that fit adult feet (washed properly along with all our other merino stuff).

Rapha merino socks cheaper than Wiggle at mo in sale £10 a pair and free shipping promo code.

The last thing for winter commuting I'd want to be wearing are cheap wool socks, what I'd want to be wearing are quality wool socks. 🙂

I've had to darn the toes of my Assos Winter Plus socks! Swines don't make them anymore.

I picked up a bunch of bridgedale merino hiking socks cheap from Cotswold a little while ago £7/£8 a pair. Thickish, comfy, wearing well so far. Ankle+ not calf or knee length.

I use long wool socks from where ever I can get them, as long as they are actual wool they are fine. Warm when wet and being long help keep your calf warm. Look anywere from outdoors shops, tk max, m&s agricultal supplies stores have good thick ones.

Rapha Merino's are down to a tenner a pair and free postage in current sale. They are great and at that price IMO too good to miss.

for commuting I would go to decathlon and get whatever bargains they have (hiking socks?)

think about doubling up though, same layering principle applies to feet the same as the rest of the body - get some woollen inners and cheap manmade as outers that can go in the rag box once the winter grime and cleaning destroys them

Not only me then. Even under correct washing they do seem to shrink a bit.
DHBs on the other hand are will worth the extra money paid and I'll be getting some more.

Luckily I live in Hawick and johnstones of Elgin (I don't understand) have a sale on seconds etc. So my winter socks tend to be £2 a pair cashmere because they are seconds. Warm toes inside my sealskins.

Woolie Boolies, they're not cheap, but they're excellent. Like B R I don't want to skimp on something that'll keep my feet warm in winter!

They last well anyway.

There's a scando brand that gets recommended on here, I forget the name. I bought a 3 pack from sportspursuit last winter and when washed they did that shrinking wool trick, but to good effect as they're now snug and thicker / more windproof. If I could remember the name...

I've got two sets of On-One merino socks. The older one's were great. Washed in the regular wash eventually wore out. Bough some replacement ones but they felt less "fluffy". Anyway washed in exactly the same way and they're now the wife's as they don't fit my feet.

this for me. Had some black merino thinnies a couple of years ago as part of a merino/coolmax 3-pack, and they washed perfectly with very regular wear until they wore out in the toes. Bought 2 3-packs of the new thinnies (grey/red stripe) and lasted one wash. At that rate of attrition, Rapha would have been better value 🙄

Got a few eBay Ulvangs ages ago from a PSA on here, very good just a bit too thick for some of my cycling shoes.

A vote for woollie boolies. Find a discount code or special offer as they are worth the little extra they cost.
My 4 pairs are 3 years old and still perfect. They get worn all the time in winter, on and off the bike.

My preferred option are Endura baa baas, warm enough and seem to take a lot of washing without problems. Wollie boolies are also good but very thick. (I should note my commute shoes don't have any mesh so are fairly warm compared to some cycling shoes). Bridgedale socks are also good, although I tend to use mine mostly for walking, rather than cycling.

On-one merino are dreadful, avoid.

I just ordered some of those Ulvang ones from eBay too - cheers for the link stevenmenmuir!

The PX / On-One Thicky ones are good - i've been hammering 3 pairs for the last year & they're holding up well, think they may have a slightly lower wool content than the Thinny ones as those went from a size 9-10 to a size 3-4 in just one wash...
