Anyone recommend a windows laptop that is both lightweight and with a decent size screen? Its for the wife so she wants it to be light as it will be taken here, there and everywhere. She is doing a Masters degree so needs to have a good clear screen to deal with all the graphs, charts etc. I know this opens up a whole host of options so even a recommendation of a good cheap place to buy one from will be helpful.
Lenovo always get good recommendations for durability and reliability.
I got an ACER from ACERdirect about 6 or 7 years ago that is still going strong. Build quality isn't amazing, but I think that is partly because I wanted a large a large screen, which makes the chassis a bit flexi. It's a 17.3" screen with an i5 processor, 6GB of RAM and a 750gb hard drive.
I think it cost £500 (might have been £550).
You should get something decent towards the top end of your budget.
My Wife has got a Lenovo Yoga laptop for work (13" screen) that flips to be used as a tablet. She loves it.
both lightweight and with a decent size screen?
These two criteria are at odds with each other, you're going to have to decide where your compromise is going to be. Doubly so at your price point.
At that pricepoint one of the sellers of refurbished ex industry laptops such as Morgan is worth a look. I got a Lenovo X201 from them for less than 200ukp and it is excellent. Would meet the portable requirement but not the screen size but they did have some HP laptops that might tick both boxes.
As Cougar says, "big screen" and "light weight" don't really go together. Looking at Morgan's refurbs I'd be tempted by this Toshiba Portege; I had an older mode for work years ago and it seemed light and well built. Obviously 13" screen might not be enough for what she wants though.
Tier1online might have something...
I have told my wife that screen size and weight go hand in hand so to speak. She thinks she will be happy with any screen around 13". I decided rather than waste time she should go to a shop to see physically how big the screen will be and what kind of weight she is going to be lugging about, that way we she can make a more informed decision.
I tried to explain ssd,hd or eMMC and she glazed over so i shall leave that for the time being.

Not entirely, because some with bigger screens are lighter than others. Though now we have clarification that 13" is big enough, then you can get into the world of thin and light. Given the pricepoint I'd be looking at s/h or refurbished - as above Lenovo is my standard answer, but not sure what they do in that size (mine is smaller)
