Don't know how old it is - about WW1 by the looks of it. Old Potterton round dial thing

Is it a case of just wiring in a new one or is there more to it than that? any any recommendations on what to get?

interested in something where you can programme heating and water independently

yes you can just wire in a new one.

most controllers have live/neutral/earth in then 4 terminals out

heating on
heating off (normally not used)
ho****er on
ho****er off

there are loads of simple LCD digital ones on the market, expect £25 to £40. they are all pretty much the same

I fitted one to upgrade a manual system (ie, it only had an on / off switch). Really wasn't difficult so long as you read everything carefully.

Anecdotally, I did it when the pump failed. The price of a new pump plus an electronic controller together from Screwfix was lower than the price of the pump on its own from B&Q.

Fitting the pump was a far bigger task. The old one was I'd guess 30-40 years old, and looked like it belonged in a WWII submarine. Huge bloody thing, with alternate wiring for a three-phase supply. Only way I could get it out was by taking a pipe cutter to either side.
