Any wood craftsman types around?
Essentially, baby wrecker is due at any minute so my gym time is going to be limited for a good while and I want to build a free-standing fairly basic apex type structure in the garden as a little shelter. I want a beam along the centre for hanging rings from and pull ups. My BiL isn't a Carpenter but is a good DIYer although he does like to talk things up (no idea why). So, do I [i]need[/i] to buy pressure treated wood? Can I buy softwood and treat it with some preservative? We'll only be here a year, so as long as it still looks OK when we need to sell then I can live with it, and it need to be able to take a 90kg bloke hanging from it.
If I do need it, how much more expensive is pressure treated wood? Best to buy from a timber merchant or DIY place?

Pressure treated is really needed for over a year, so should be fine in your case.
However, go to a timber merchants, and pressure treated is a very little more than standard timber. What you need to do is come up with a full design, do a cutting list and then phone up a timber merchants who will rip / cut softwood down to the desired size and pressure treat it all for you. If you're in Bristol, I'd recommend Robins Timber who also deliver any order over £100 for free.
Do not got to B&Q / wicks etc. they cost a bleeding fortune!
What tinybits says dude. I like bwrp lots and try to get bits and pieces from them if I need and have the time. However, you're unlikely to get what you need for this from them. If you need any help, I've just got myself the mother of all chopsaws! 😀
Drop me an email if you need to know anything. Selco in Bed-me are good for timber (cheap too) too and I have a trade account there if that's any use. However, somewhere like Robins will have more specialist knowledge.

FA as yet Darcy, thanks for asking. 4 days overdue according to the midwives' date, although we thought the 27th was the actual date (they bought forward due to measurements). Managed to get a game of rugby in today but obviously had to forego the post game "social"

Lots of good wood to be had at Fountain Timber in Brockley Combe.
Go for a pressure treated structural grade timber, C24 ( preferred ) or C16. It would be stamped on the end or somewhere on the face.
