Indeed 😢 As is always the case on this forum. It really can be shite at times.

Wow. Some serious crap being written on this thread.

As someone in a similar position to Kryton, married to an African lady with mixed race children, I see on a daily basis the casual racism that is being elicited in this thread. Not so much the poor joke that was made, but in the other responses. Especially Bruce’s. I’ve had a few drinks so may be I’m misreading it, but it seems to show a complete turd of a human being. But I could be misreading it. I’m pretty sure no one on this forum would try to equate the hardships of what black and other ethnic races have been through to that of being white?

Ive deleted this message/reposted it a few times as I’m pretty sure Bruce wouldn’t be the person whom I am misreading his post to be.

If I’m p1ssed and mis-read what he wrote, I apologise and I’ll apologise again in the morning. But for some reason that post has really annoyed me.

Especially Bruce’s

I read it that BruceWee was supporting kryton's point of view.

Maybe, maybe it’s my own prejudices….but these words do not seem supportive. It could well be the rum though….

Like I said, it’s tough being a white man.  It’s never simple and we just have to accept we’re never right.

Anyway, as is often the case, it’s not what was originally said that exposes prejudices and bias.  It’s the reactions to someone saying they think something is racist that are really telling

Reading back through Bruce’s previous posts, I am very likely to be missing some context. It’s a bit of a mixed bag. Looks like I’m wrong and being the arse, so for that I apologise. Seriously sorry Bruce if I’ve taken your posts out of context.

Subtle posts by BruceWee but

Yeah, it’s tough being a white man.  It’s like we’re the persecuted minority, am I right?

and

Like I said, it’s tough being a white man.  It’s never simple and we just have to accept we’re never right.

Are a bit MAGA stylee weird and creepy frankly!

I think I know what he means... Regardless of what your opinion is, you're dammed if you do and dammed if you don't, if you know what I mean.... There is always someone looking to find a crack that they can stick their finger into.

Everyone seemingly wants to be offended and is ready to shout about it.

Doubt Mr Wooster is a MAGA fan boy.... How've, if he is, then **** him. 🤪

I’m clearly not a MAGA fan boy, I just reposted what Bruce had said earlier. I just did the cut and paste very badly so it looked like they were my words.

FWIW I’m married to a beautiful lady from Tanzania and we have two daughters. I’m not in anyway looking for outrage, I personally didn’t see the original joke as racist, just poor form that could be construed either way.

Other posts have been confusing!! And as said earlier. If I’ve misunderstood what Bruce was saying, I apologise. I’m still confused by what ever it is he is saying though.

It’s hard to explain the racism we see though. My wife is a successful businesswoman, earns significantly more than me, in most shops and sales environments we go to she is ignored. The higher end shop or restaurant the more it happens. This really is a daily occurrence. Even in her business, if we meet clients or contractors working for her, they treat me as the person behind the company. It’s massively blatant.

I could go on about this but I’m going to leave it along and go to bed.

Again, Bruce. I apologise if I misread your posts.

So it's not just me finished with dry January then? I think having a few drinks and getting into a discussion on the subtleties of micro-aggressions is something we should start doing every Friday night.

Anyway, to clarify.

Yeah, it’s tough being a white man.  It’s like we’re the persecuted minority, am I right?

Pure sarcasm.  Should have had a winky.

Like I said, it’s tough being a white man.  It’s never simple and we just have to accept we’re never right.

That one probably wouldn't have been helped by a winky.

It was a response to the post above mine where the person implied they weren't white.  Partly it was a call back to the first, but I was also showing how even if there is someone who is pretty undeniably a racist (in this case Bernard Manning as in the story I linked), often there will be a person of colour who defends them or defends what they say.

As a white person, it feels very wrong to tell a person of colour you disagree with them on racism but at the same time I think it's OK to disagree and challenge.  After all, racism takes so many different forms in terms of how it is directed towards people of different races and in terms of mirco-aggressions vs overt racism.

So yeah, just realised I wasn't quoting the posts I was responding which no doubt didn't help.

I am sticking with this quote though:

Anyway, as is often the case, it’s not what was originally said that exposes prejudices and bias.  It’s the reactions to someone saying they think something is racist that are really telling.

I think if someone calls out something as being racist (or even just suggests it might be) some people are going to have a knee jerk reaction and jump in to deny it.  Plenty were more than happy to do that which is what got me annoyed.  Just to clarify, it's possible to say something racist or racially insensitive and not be racist.  We should all be open to being challenged on what we say because often we can say incredibly racist stuff just through not thinking through all the nuances.

Just ask Danny Baker.  Again, I believe his original tweet was racist but unintentionally, but it was his reaction to the racism being pointed out that was problematic.

Anyway, I came here last night to post on the rugby thread rather than this one (far more suited to having had a few drinks).  I just saw this one and got a shock.  Weirdly enough I'd just been watching him in Arrested Development.

'Baby, I got a stew going'

Blimey, I didn't expect that! Apologies that my joke didn't go down entirely as intended.

Not intended as racist one bit (it's a style of joke popular among a group of friends, some of whom are on here).

Is it safe to say he’s with teh angles??

As one of Al’s friends he’s referring to I can confirm that this is meant to be a joke, there are no (intended!) racist undertones to it at all, every famous person who dies gets this treatment, the previous one was Annie Nightingale with pictures of Florence Nightingale and others I can’t recall just now. It plays on the FB numpties/huns who are grief mongers and usually post the wrong picture of the person or have atrocious spelling such as “she’s wiv teh angles”.

Others have been posted on here before too without issue.

Blimey, I didn’t expect that!

Why would you? In what other setting would getting savaged for making a joke based on surname similarity be considered normal?

The same surname-similarity joke has been done on this forum dozens of times with barely a feather ruffled. It's weird that this particular version should cause so much angst.

As for Carl, I can't recall seeing him in anything other than Predator, where he played a good counter to the big "star" really well.

**** me! This went awry quickly. Completely forgot that Carl Weathers was the voice of Combat Carl in Toy Story 4. This thread needs some good vibes.

Easing the tension. Easing the tension

Actually, the only person I see getting 'savaged' is the one who pointed out that this may have been a micro-aggression because of the racist undertones of getting black people mixed up.

People really got triggered.

Yep.  It's weird.  I always thought it was the woke people who were supposed to be the snowflakes.  This thread shows otherwise.

Is this because of her heritage or because she is a woman ? Obviously wrong in either instance.
I don’t need to make excuses for any of these people , but how do you come across in your interactions ? . For example , my friend runs a business and her husband works for her . Unless you knew them , you wouldn’t know this, as he is very overbearing and likes to make himself the centre of attention.
