The dog has chewed through the wires to the reversing light. Does it matter if I make a repair with a slightly thicker wire? Basic electrics I should know I suppose.

Provided you make the joints properly then it makes no difference.

Slightly thicker? No
Massively thicker? Might effect the resistance but it would have to be a huge cable to be a noticable difference
