Hi chaps,

I bought a used BMW from not a BMW dealership, barely any miles on the clock, and it's developed a lovely noise from the back. I've done all the usual things, Gummi Pfledge etc. But nothing has stopped it and I can't trace it.

Took it to BMW last week, diagnosed it as needing to have the trim removed to investigate. They recommended taking it back to the place I bought it from.

Now.. the place I bought it from have a 3 month warranty, and it's now 4 and a bit months in.

Where do I stand? Are there rules around dealerships selling used cars that they have to abide by? Or do I just pay BMW to fix it?

Cheers for the help chaps!

Ricks

Have you spoke to the place you bought it from?

The 3 month warranty probably didn't cover it anyway...aftermarket warranties are utterly rubbish. You've got more protection under sale of goods.

Remove the trim yourself, can't be that hard?!

I can't isolate the noise, and I'm worried about making it worse myself. Thought BMW would be the best guys to tackle it, as they must have been through it with the same car before.

What sort of noise? Have you tried a BMW forum? There can't be much behind the trim apart from insulation and wiring. Somethings moving, you just need to stop it. (unless its mechanical, which would be under the car and unlikely to need trim moving)

Sounds like the spring or damper specs might be wrong. Optimum performance comes from having springs where the normal GVM falls as close to the middle of the springs range as possible. Then the dampers must be adjusted to match. Same as a coil fork on a bike. In fact, it's a bit like an inappropriately fitting bike, but the car version.
