I purchased some nice wheels with winter tyres for our current car. 235/55 x 19 tyres.
I prefer the wheels to the 18" variety the car also has.
In the garage I also have 4 x nearly new Michelin tyres off our last car but these are 225/55 x 19
Any real practical issues with using a tyre of 225 x 235 width?
Thanks!
They'll stretch onto the rims, most certainly.
But the OD will be a bit less...

The tyre will be 10mm shy of the width of the rim hence will be "stretched" (this is actually a thing on the VW scene...) but I think it would be ill-advised and potentially an MOT failure.
Also the tyre will be lower profile (55% of 225mm not 235mm) so will ride harder on a bigger wheel.. so probs be pretty hard!

He hasn't mentioned the rim width so how do you know that?
On the back of the wheel it should have a with marked as "8J" etc which is 8"
It might be ok but in general a narrower tyre will have a lower load index so you would need to check that as well as fitment.
Almost certainly it'll be fine. The only issue may be your insurance company would count it as a modification.
I don't know about newer cars but on old cars it's certainly not and MOT failure.
I briefly drove with it the other way around, garage put 225's on a 235 spec car. I didn't check when I collected it but the traction control kept kicking in even though I was driving normally, on checking I noticed the narrower tyres had been fitted. The garage initially refused to swap them foc as I'd done a few miles (so they couldn't resell as new) and apparently it was as much my fault for not checking when I collected it (even though they didn't dispute I'd ordered 235's). They gave in pretty soon though and I've not been back since (after they swapped them for the correct size obviously).
So basically - not sure if you'd also have issues with sensors getting triggered or if that was just because the size was reduced in my case
I stand corrected, please ignore the first half of my post benz! Everyday is a school day and all that.
The 235 tyre will increase the diameter by 1.7%, which reduce the speed reading but anything under 2% is usually acceptable without causing any problems.

Nickewen - you might be right just don't have the information to know for sure is all I was saying. Assuming the wheel is perfectly matched to the tyre you are but if he had a wheel that is already a bit big for a 235 then a 225 might be more of an issue
I don't reckon you'd notice any difference with handling...however you should check both load and speed ratings are correct for the car.
I just hadn’t realised there was range of tyre widths for a given rim width. I (wrongly) assumed a 235mm tyre would go on a 235mm rim
You`d think so but tyres are made in mm widths and rims are made in inches and people say bike industry standards are silly 😉
