[Closed] Car Sauna: The Game Where Everyone Loses

To celebrate the hottest day of the year, I treated my girlfriend to a game of car sauna.
The basic principle is:
Shut the windows. Turn the heaters on as hot/high flow as they go. Heated seats? Bonus! Crank 'em up.

First person to open the door, put the windows down or get out the car loses.

But really, we all lose.

Bit warm outside

Note heated seats cranked to the max

It begins

GF is starting to suffer

And, 50 minutes later we had arrived at the destination, with no-one losing. But really, neither of us won.

I’m playing Train sauna. Been on this train going nowhere for about 50 mins in the sun....

Place bets on how long until I sweat to death?

My car is pretty old.
All original functions work. Except the air con. Damn.

About to drive from York to Shrops. Aircon knackered and gauge showing 30.5° still. Windows down all the way I think.

No air con here. Windows down though. Ca sauna sounds like a fun game to play in winter. I’m playing regular sauna by just sitting in the living room

I win.

I've spent a couple of days on the BPW uplift truck.
A Matt black box outside.
Lots of windows. None open.
White reflective box inside.
Hot engine underneath.
28 sweaty bikers.

It was steamy in there.

3 hours in the car, steady away on the motorway. Air con on full cold, showing 37 degrees outside this afternoon.
I may be playing the game completely wrong but I was damn comfortable and for once not that bothered about getting home quickly.
Car sauna sounds like a game for fools to me!

Our new car has ventilated seats!

It's not being delivered for about 18 months though.

Four years ago on our first trip in the new camper it was 42 deg as we left Finale to travel home and a tunnel booked which meant no stop offs apart from fuel. The air con kept knocking off after 5 mins and even when it was off we couldn't get any air flow through the cab with the fan on full blast and the windows fully down. We drove for 14 hours and the temp was still in the 30s when we got to the tunnel. It was like someone had put a hose pipe on us. Didn't help that the seats were leather
Van was booked into Ford who were baffled at first until they discovered we had a bonnet for a left hand drive car and as such the wrong air intake was blanked off.
Wouldn't ever want to go through that discomfort again

Just paid 300 quid to fix the aircon in our Panda. The condenser had disintegrated. Worth every penny.

Driving from Sheffield to Morzine tomorrow!

**** that, note the tape deck!

It's a Pre 05 SAAB... Tape deck and CD player unit - made it much easier to have your phone hooked up to the stereo via bluetooth with a aux cassette than the cars fitted with SatNav and a 6 CD changer in the boot. They were a pain to get an aux input

Least the Dame Edna Saabs have an aux 3.5mm jack

It's 1998, I'm 17, we are inter-rail between Venice and Athens. Train is expected to take 36 hours. Somewhere in Yugoslavia, Skopje I think, the train stops, cue guys in uniform with machine guns getting on the train and checking passports. No idea why they train stopped there, it wasn't supposed to. I admit I was a little worried. 10 hours later, we haven't moved. 45 0' centigrade for at least 8 of those hours, too scared to get off for a pee in case the train moved on. That was hot!!!

It's been car sauna day here every day for the last month. 3 weeks ago we were topping out at 42 deg C. Nowadays it hovers around 38/39 mid afternoon.

Between the time when I start the car to come home in the afternoon, until the AC becomes effective, I think I lose half a litre in sweat!

Respect to the OP for posting pics for us all to ridicule.

For a couple of months last summer I had a van with a big dent in the driver's door, as a result the window wouldn't budge and no AC. Cue the hottest summer we've had for years.

nobeerinthefridge, does your aircon work for briefly when you start the car? If so, compressor clutch is at fault. I took a spacer/shim out and fixed it for free 🙂 Think clever, get a re-gas from kwikfit first and then if that doesn't work, you get a refund anyway, then fix the compressor (doesn't need to be de-gassed)

your missus is hot

I met a mate in town yesterday for PSB at the Proms (hint, brilliant, on BBC4 later tonight),

He'd been in town all day for meetings and being traditional sorts of meetings he had on a suit and a pale shirt, and had struggled with the problem that if he took his jacket off he'd have a dark back and pits. So when I met him he'd had his jacket on basically all day.

Next time in car sauna, wear a coat

You need a better heater. Or just blow the 37c air directly 8nto the car. Looks balmy where you are.

Yes, but it does stupid bloody auto level adjust. So the process goes:
- unplug Bluetooth -> aux adapter jack, but leave powered up
- start music on phone
- turn volume to min on phone
- plug 3.5mm in
- change stereo to aux
- turn volume on phone to Max
- set up to desired level.
Every. Bloody. Time.
Because if you don't, max stereo volume = lots of static noise and barely audible music. Grrrrr.

Also, night panel is total nonsense.

50 minutes from Linlithgow to Home Bargains in Livingston, you need a better Sat-Nav!

It was from central Edinburgh, Linlithgow is just where my brewery is.

The tape deck adapter actually works quite well...
I do have a more modern double DIN stereo with Bluetooth, but dunno if I can be bothered fitting.

Night panel is useless haha. Don't want to dazzle myself so I can make split second manouvers on the M8 when I see MIGs on the horizon.

Off to spray some antibac on my seats lol

I liked the Night panel. CD player - haa - wasn't *that* long ago still had the 900S which had *just* a tape deck. At least could hook the iPod into the radio.

If the option was cooking in the car, or getting out in a retail park in Livingstone, I'd cook.

At this time of year (and when it's freezing) my cars cabin preconditioning is brilliant!

Come out to the car, and it's already nicely chilled to 21 degC

(and no, i don't have to leave a smelly, in-efficinent internal combustion engine idling to do it either, in fact, it's actually chilled by the sun!)

I’ve been on holiday all this week, and I’ve done my best to avoid doing anything much at all, in particular driving my car, as the AC broke years ago, and the car’s value was about equivalent to the cost of getting the AC fixed. The car is now effectively worth nothing, but it keeps going, and I’ll continue to put up with a non-functioning AC.
4x70 AC is ok on A-and-B roads, but not on motorways - I’ve got a run to Heathrow next Saturday to pick up my g/f’s sister and niece, and take them on to Salisbury, hopefully it’ll be cooler; I don’t want to have the bloody windows open for 180 miles!
