I know this is all comparative and that I pay less than many people but....

Just gone to renew the insurance on my car - same car as last year, I'm a year older, car is only 5 years old (so not 'old'), we live in the same house as last year and I've not had any claims.

Last year I paid £270 and cheapest price now seems to be £380 for exactly the same cover. Tossers.

And if you pay it you're a mug. Go Compare, etc, etc.

i had this recently

no one came close to my renewal it was still by far the cheapest at 220 quid. last year was 180.

How ever the biggest shock came when the wife phoned to change from her 15 year old berlingo to a 3 year old one with nearly twice as much power and worth 9 times or more as much .... thatll be a 40 quid admin fee to change details but no increase in policy - and it looks like it will actually decrease from looking at the comparison sites.

Have you tried direct line? They've been the cheapest for me lately.

Everything else being equal, could the risk associated with your postcode have been adjusted?

She's such a lucky lady

Doubtful angeldust.... our postcode covers a couple of square miles in the sticks with 6 houses - not a lot happens!

Think I need to make a phone call to see what's going on.

Don't expect much of a response beyond "risks are constantly analysed and prices adjusted accordingly". Good chance the call centre folk wont even be able to see the different scorings (Direct Line used to be able to see what had changed, that was a lloonnnggg time ago though so might not be the case now)

Yes phoning up usually helps, especially if you can find a cheaper quote from somewhere.

Yeah, good old Insurance Company Risk Assessments..

Same here, last year £244 for a powerful two seater convertible that does less than 3k a year, this year same company renewal £620.. Ahh.. Tesco, maybe it's because I slag off your supermarkets you tried to sting me..

So went on the annual hunt for the cheapest and got another quote for £280 with another insurer.. It does seem like the yearly merry-go-round change insurer is the only option open to us now.

Which is a bit dull.

Its worth trying the few companies that are not on the comparison sites. Direct Line for example saved me nearly £1000 this year plus they include business cover as standard.

Mine - due in January - went down by £50.  When I "compared", and did a few direct checks it was the cheapest I could get also.  Seems someone - Admiral - might be into retaining customers for once.

My renewal note was similar this year, up by about £140 from last year. I phoned them to see if they could drop it and they couldn't, even when I told them not to renew it as I had a better deal elsewhere.

I presumed they didn't actually want the business anymore, a change is customer profile or something?

It amused me when we finished the call and the lady asked if she could help me with anything else, she hadn't even been able to help me with what I called up for...

I had this. Last year with Tesco it was £300. This year £500.

Just gone with Aviva for £280.

Amusingly, Aviva was the underwriter on the Tesco policy.

Just how the game is played.

Costs are up and insurance companies are passing on the cost to the consumer.

That and Brexit 😉

Oddly one of the cheaper quotes I had was john lewis via compare the market, going direct was 3 times more expensive.

Aviva is the cheapest for me so far by about £50.

I changed from a 90hp diesel berlingo to a 230hp rwd car and got £11 back... Now it costs even less since I modified it.

So buy a less sensible car is my advice 😉

Pfft, can I recommend getting a newly qualified 17 year old on your policy for comparison 🙂

now that depends is your 230hp RWD car insured by adrian flux* or underwritten by markerstudy* mr wiggles ?

*not all insurance is equal and there are companies i will not give money to even if they are the cheapest.

Phone them up. Mine dropped the renewal price to slightly cheaper than the previous year after the renewal showed £100 more. Cheeky barstewards

Your first years premium is discounted, if it wasnt you would have gone to a different company.

There has to be some profit somewhere so thats subsequent years.

You can avoid that by changing company every year.
