Do people still do them? If so, any recommendations for one around the Crawley/West Sussex area?

Are they worth doing? With my move to Canada pending I have some stuff I need to unload.

All depends on the quality of the crap you need shot of.

1st one I ever went to I made £120.

But no doubt someone will reccommend the tip or charity shop.

If you're stacking it high and selling it cheap it's a goer. Otherwise eBay. That's my experience. Enjoy Canada.

Theirs a few car boot sales local to us (North Cumbria).

Everyone expects a bargain. The wife has someone offer £2 for a Sky HD box.

What surprised me last time I did one was the crazy haggling - like some people have to haggle on principle. I was focused more on getting rid of everything than maximising revenue so my prices were already very keen, hence the surprise when you've got something useful priced at 15p and someone wants to offer you 5p for it!

To be fair, it was good fun and I joined in with the spirit of it - I can't take less than 10p for it, oh go on then, 8p, deal!

Like a really small time, crapper Mike Brewer without the syrup.

Did it Once, all the shite you think you'll never sell, sells, all the decent stuff doesn't. And watch oot for the thieves, it's full of them.

Never again.

It’s also one of those activities where, for some unknown  reason, it has been decreed that it starts at an ungodly hour of the morning! They always seem to insist on you pitching up at 6am or thereabouts, on a Saturday! Why?!

We've done quite a few of them, mainly around the Chesterfield/Sheffield area.

I find them great fun! People are idiots when it comes to pricing, but if you stand firm it can be pretty decent.

The other half took some pretty decent clothing once, with the intention of eBaying it if it didn't sell. It all went for amazing prices, and took away all the hassle.

One tip, always put price stickers on. It  can get amazingly busy, and not having to shout out prices every 10 seconds is a great help!

And as Nobeerinthefridge says, thieves everywhere! If you can take more people with you to help then do!

Oooh. Canada. I'm not envious at all, not one bit. Nope, not me.

I'm really envious. Dammit. Good luck!

Edit: top car boot tip - if you want blokes to come and browse your stuff just put a box of rusty old crap at the front. They LOVE it. Like honey to a bear.

I remember saying that to clear a load of clothes and costume jewellery the people looking could have 3 for a £1, one of them was trying to get a discount because they couldn't find 3 items they liked only 2!

Most amusing was one bloke standing there eyeing me up for a suit that I was selling and then haggling a bit, he went off happy with the suit, but it wasn't mine it was my brother in law's who is a foot shorter than me!

I once had a woman haggle for a 50p kettle. Asked me every question under the sun about it. "Does it work okay, how long does it take to boil, is it a good pourer? Her finishing line was "if it is so good why are your selling it then?"

£2 seems fair for a sky HD box as the buyer does not know if it works.
