I'm thinking about doing this with MrsSalmon - it'd be her first cycle touring/bikepacking type trip so we're not looking for anything too gnarly. Has anyone got any bike-friendly accommodation tips for the coastal part? Apart from the Premier Inn in Folkestone.
She'd be on a Ribble Hybrid with 38mm Schwalbe Allrounds on.
Me, did it last year on my 29er hardttail (full rigid with 50mm Rambler tyres and double chainset). Enjoyed it although the sea fog rolled in at Dover which limited views for that section.
Mostly 'offroad' on cycle paths and paved tracks so can cover ground fast (especially given the relatively low ascent over the route) but shared with other users with busy sections so a bell is useful (plus i didnt do it at the even busier weekend). Pick your direction based on wind direction down the coast...i did it reversed as i didn't want a headwind all down the coast.
Cant help on accomodation (did it in a day to tick the Restrap Solstice century ride off)
It’s pretty benign apart from a bit of the North Downs way which can be slippery chalk.
I did the premier inn in Dover, so not much to say about accom 😉
when are you thinking of doing it?
I am a Folkestone local and although have no space for humans I might be able to store a bike or two if we are about.
Will have a think on accommodation too.
Message me if you want timATjtwren.co.uk
It's on my to-do list this summer. I did a motorbike version a few years ago. I loved Dungeness.
@Bear maybe mid late May - still very much in the planning stages! That's a kind offer though, thanks
Yeah, on the road tandem a couple of years ago preceded by a recce from Kings Cross then round and back to Kings Cross a couple of weeks before. We stayed at the Premier Inn, Folkestone. Surprise of the route were giraffes and zebras...! Nothing else notable in a 'beware of' sense.
I live in Kent but had never even heard of the Cantii Way. Looks good. 👍
