The wife's new DSLR camera keeps getting a error reading the memory card and losing all the Xmas photos. Usually after I've used it so its always my fault!

Using a canon dslr 700d with a PNY Sdhc class 10 16gb memory card.

Camera says Card cannot be accessed reinsert/change card or format card with camera.

Any ideas why causes it and how to stop it? She's reformatted the memory card a few times but it keeps happening.

Also any ideas on how to recover the photos from the memory card?

Google photorec and testdisk. May help recover the pics.

Sounds like a crappy sd card, can you try another?

Yup, if a card gives the slightest sign of having issues, bin it and use another. Preferably a SanDisk. If you've lost files, first port of call is a different card reader / slot / computer.

If you still have the receipt you can send the card back as faulty.

photorec for image recovery - works great.

it sounds more of a memory card error. Have you tried another card?

Sandisk recovery program if its one of their cards, if not Piriform Recuva usually does a decent job

Be sure to format the card in the camera, not on a computer

As said above new card would be the best bet

FTFY.
I bought a set of unbranded, (actually Toshiba made) 8Gb SDHC cards from 7dayshop.com, four for fifteen quid, IIRC, and none have given me a problem in my Lumix, so it might be worth getting several different makes from them, say a Transcend, a Sandisk, and a Kingston, that way you can get a better idea if it's a camera or media issue.
I've taken thousands of photos, and the only issue I've had was with a MicroSDHC card in an SD adaptor, which was flakey.

I would buy a new one anyway. Prove the old one doesn't work and take it back, or if it does work (after a low level format in the camera for example) then keep it as a spare. I loose count the number of times I forget my memory card, or forget to take the pics/footage off it and need the extra space, I've had them go funny before too (although some years ago). A spare is often invaluable.

I'm a canon/gopro user and have found the transcends great value for money (if not so great for high bitrate video if you use magic lantern).
