Is it possible to display the photo that is going to be taken on the display screen as opposed to using the eyepiece? If so, how?

I've got this on my 450d so it should work on yours too. You need to go into the menu settings and enable live view. Once you've done that, pressing the 'set' button whilst on the normal display screen will turn live view on and off. If you want to be able to auto-focus with it, you need to enable this in another menu, then you can use the 'zoom out / exposure lock' button. Hope that makes sense!

Sorry to be a pain Shaun rob but how do you enable live view?? Im on menu settings but cant see an option to enable live view. Is it anything to do with the 'display' button as when pressed there is an icon of of camera....this is showing as enable but nothing happening when presing 'set' button.

A quick search on google says:

'put the mode dial into creative (e.g. Av, M, etc.). press menu, find live view function settings (middle yellow) in there enable sorted

then all you do to get live view is to press the set button when in use with the creative functions'

You should note that once in live view, you can probably set a particular button to do the focussing. Because live view means the mirror is locked up, you have to press a button (possibly *) to cause the mirror to flip down, the camera to focus and the mirror to flip back up. Then you can use the shutter button to actually take the picture.

To be honest, there are very few good reasons to use an slr by looking at the image on the screen like this - better to just look through the view finder if you can.

Focus in live view is very slow compared to looking through the view finder (uses a different type of autofocus). I generally find the only time it's useful is when the camera is on a tripod and i'm trying to manually focus something.

I never use it, but it might be worth noting that live view will only work in the creative (I know what I'm doing) modes. If you're using full auto (green rectangle) then it's not available.

Live view can also cause the internal camera temperature to rise, that in turn can cause noise, irregular colour(especially with long exposures)and make the battery run down considerably faster.

Thanks for all the advice, sounds like its not worth using after all. Might come in handy for using canera when got to be held high away from face. Thanks again
