I ask the question, would the furnace have been reignited if salaries were pushed up by greedy and selfish unions and employees?
Would there be any industrial jobs left in the UK at all if greedy shareholders had their way, keep it up unions and employees..
[i]Mr Dunning added: "I would like to say a big thank you to all those involved in the return of steelmaking to Redcar, including the SSI team and the trade unions.
"A special thank you and tribute should also go to Geoff Waterfield, who truly embodied the passion and determination for steel here in Teesside."
Mr Waterfield, 43, worked at the Corus, Tata and the SSI UK site for about five years before his death last August. He was the chairman of the multi-unions at the Redcar site.

The above comes from the link you provided, and would seem to suggest that the unions have been instrumental in the process of bringing steel making back. But don't let that stop you from trolling.
Wills Waterfield, the 11-year-old son of late union chief Geoff Waterfield, performed the ceremonial lighting.
Sounds like the new company intend on having a working relationship with the unions, good on them.
Do you not realise the damage that will be done to the environment by the millions of tons of CO2 that will be released from that plant annually!
This is further proof that the Tories don't care about the environment or the long term future of this country, and that their claims to be the greenest government were yet more lies!
The link says that steel produced from the furnace is being exported.
Wrong, only iron is produced in a blast furnace, iron needs to be refined and other elements added along with oxygen to make steel.
If we sacked a lot of the accountants who get paid to much to tell us that our products cost to much, then the savings made would make the products cheaper.
and would seem to suggest that the unions have been instrumental in the process of bringing steel making back.
Did they achieve this by withdrawing or threatening to withdraw, labour in an effort to increase costs for the company?
More likely they've accepted lower reduced pay and conditions to attract foreign investment. A union truly working in the interests of the employees.
Trolling? Away with you little boy.

Is that what they did, or just your fantasy?

Young child of dad who sadly died, makes good story.
But best wishes to the workforce, in what is a dangerous and skilled job.

Yes, the media like spins ...
Now they need more Health & Safety rules ... or they will go on strike ... ๐

Agreed.
You mean you don't actually know?
That would be why I asked the question.

It would appear that no-one is happy with this good news.
As you were, happy striking. ๐
I am genuinely happy with the good news so just hope nothing spoil it for a long time.
I hate looking at families with "long faces" ... needing public feeding.

Well of course its good news, good news that unions were instrumental in creating, so where does your rather silly anti union polemic fit in?
so where does your rather silly anti union polemic fit in?
I think you have an over active imagination, where is this anti-union polemic?
I am happy that jobs are being generated.
I am happy that the union was instrumental in this.
I am happy that foreign companies want to invest in the UK.
I am unhappy that a few idiotic employees seem to think that unions are simply tools for pushing up costs.
Are you one of these?
Next?

Go on then tell us ................how many millions of tons of the dreades co2
You're a bit short on thinking, aren't you?
Greedy unions = bad.
Helpful unions = good.
Less bad and more good = better UK.

Don't fret, they're going to use the steel to make windmills. What goes around, etc.
Aww donny, have you had a bad day? You seem awfully out of sorts..

Is that some sort of new Edinburgh defence?

But you seem to be squirming around your rather senseless arguments.

No I'm not, go back and re-read. ๐
Your enthusaism in trying to trip me up has floundered if anything.
It's trolling, but so poorly done that you can't even keep it up. Go for a walk, read a book, try being pleasant.

If this was called DS trolls out his arse it would have been more subtle.

About six million tons a year they reckoned when it closed down
This thread's getting must try harder written on it in red pen.
Honest question: -are there more and less efficient blast furnaces? ie could someone else's blast furnace somewhere else produce the same amount of steel for less or more emissions? Otherwise, if it's not done here it will be done abroad with poorer working conditions and safety anyway.

+1 and ๐
This is good news. The teeside area is really beginning to pick up after too many years of decline.
Its becoming more popular as a destination for container ships and the steel mill is right next to the docks, so is ideally suited for inbound and outbound materials with virtually zero road miles.
Well done to the site and employees (and possibly the investors and unions) for turning this site back on, it really is good news for the area.
Otherwise, if it's not done here it will be done abroad with poorer working conditions and safety anyway.
Agreed - but the CO2 issue was a significant factor in why it was closed down... IIRC, Tata were set to make more money off the cap and trade european carbon credits than they would have off the steel.
Has DS ever worked in a furnace? I have in S****horpe, in the furnace that bears a plaque to the men that where killed when a "torpedo" blew up there. They are hateful, depressing, inhospitable places and anyone who works there full time deserves the bonuses of a banker
stavromuller -i think you meant worked on a blast furnace, not in one.
The explosion was caused by water being allow to flow into a torpedo, and then molten iron being tapped into it.
A very serious nd tragic accident.

Though the source is not one I would normally choose, the story above checks out.
Basiically with a surplus of steel in the world due to the 2008 recession, TATA found they could get money from the EU for reducing EU emmisions (carbon credit surplus) AND get money from UN for getting Indian plants to the same standard at the one in teeside 50% approx reduction).
Big corps can be bad at this and the Northeast has had more than its fair share of abusive global corps. The Tata story is similar to the ABF one at Twinings. Twinings closed their NE plant, and applied for an EU grant to set up a new one in Poland.
Thankfully the ABF grant has now been refused:

And yet you get all huffy if anyone challenges you...
Has DS ever worked in a furnace?
Hopefully working conditions and safety have moved on since 1974 and the deaths weren't in vain.
I only get 'huffy' with wind up merchants, at which you (to your credit)absolutely excel. Hats off to you. Any other hidden talents other than being a riding god? Or don't you need any more than those to keep you happy?
Anyway, have you ever actually worked? (cos I'm beginning to build up a picture of DS)

You really do give so much away.
