Only really have experience of France, where it's not really necessary to book, and you come across sites every five minutes it seems. What is it like in Germany? Do you need to pre-book for a tent? are municipal campsites very common? Do they have a season?
We'd be going in the first couple of weeks in September, mainly over night stays on our way to Southern Germany.
We camped around the Mosel, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Neuschwanstein and the Black Forest and found the camping great. Didn't find as many sites as in France but we had a decent guidebook.
There was no need to book pitches (June) but then we only had a Suzuki Swift and a 2-man tent.
Everyone was friendly and the local beers and wines were amazing.
I doubt you'll have to pre-book in September.
Lots of sights, maybe not as many as France, but lots. All the ones we stayed at were (unsurprisingly) clean and efficiently run.
I have to say, the Germans were pretty much some of the friendliest people we met on our European tour. I could happily live in Germany.
For camping out of season, an ACSI book/card can save some cash, plus you get a book full of sites and a route planner CD for how to get to them.
Well my experience of Germany was a miserable bunch of b*stards, but then that was Bavaria, and apparently everyone else in Germany thinks the same about Bavarians 🙂
Only stayed on one campsite but it was a lot like a French one. Itemised billing and so on. Not especially cheap for what it was but like I say a sample size of one 🙂
We rocked up in Bavaria in August and found camping with no need to pre book. We also found Bavarians friendly and helpful and interested in the only Brits on the site.
