Can anyone recommend a family friendly campsite in Derbyshire. We live in Derby and want to take the 3 year old camping for a few nights later in the year but before we commit to that we want to try somewhere a bit closer to home for one night to make sure he likes the experience!
Looking for somewhere that might have a park and is kids friendly, proper toilets and shower block etc.
Thanks!
One at Longnor, which is Derby / Staffs border, I thought was OK. I didn't test with a small child, though.
One in hope seemed OK when I snuck on and scammed a free shower....
Go south to the Beehive near Rosliston. Used to have a little petting farm park. Great café, very popular with cyclists. Big flat site. Rabbits all over the place. Wild and semi wild.
Handy for Conkers, Hicks Lodge and the main Rosliston National Forest site. Couple of years since we went but I remember decent family shower rooms at the time.
There is a good one in Ashbourne I've beards of. We're going to give it a go this year. It's on the a515 Buxton road just as you leave Ashbourne and before you get to Fenny Bentley.
We stayed at Whatstandwell last year at the campsite you might have cycled through if you're familiar with Black Rock. That's ok not as nice as the Ashbourne site is supposed to be though.
Is there a family type site near or at Carsington Water? Seem to remember some friends saying there for a similar 'test-camp' trip
Birchwood Farm near Whatstandwell always looks decent when I've ridden past. Interesting woods right next door for walks and right on the doorstep of some nice cheeky riding should you get an hour to yourself!...

We love this place Barn Farm, Birchover. They have fantastic facilities including a playground, clean and tidy toilet blocks, a shop, a wet weather room, a burger van that comes in the morning for those too lazy to cook their own bacon sarnies and - if you get the right pitch - some fabulous views. The village has two pubs and some brilliant easy walks such as Stanton Moor. The caves behind the Druid Inn are fab for kids to explore and Robin Hood's Stride is another great place for a walk/play.
Bakewell is a 5 minute drive if you need shops or other entertainment. Highly recommended.
[edit - popular too, so booking is recommended]
As above we stay at birch wood farm regularly. As muffin says great riding from the tent door, shower block is OK, nothing too fancy but big plus is the site shop which has little bits not bobs to keep the kids entertained plus great prices on bacon and milk etc.
One of the best shower blocks I've ever seen is the site near Elvastone castle called beechwood park. Ideally close for you if in Derby but birchwood is only 25 mins also.
Rivendale caravan park is right by the Tissington trail and has good facilities. Be aware that any site at altitude in the Peaks is liable to get cold at night.
this is the "good one in Ashbourne" right on Tissington trail - not a remote camping experience, pretty busy but our kids loved it when younger

I'd also vote for Barn Farm mentioned above
as said booking at both is probably a good idea
Another vote for Barn Farm too. Definitely book if you intend to go during school holidays/easter/bank holidays as it fills up completely. Nice short walk to the village pubs too for food if you want as well.
Some great suggestions thanks. Will have a look in more detail but Barn Farm or Birchwood Farm look ideal. Elvaston Castle is a bit too close - it still has to feel like an adventure!
Another vote for Barn Farm here. Nice location and critically has a couple of decent pubs within a 5 minute walk.
I have used Hardhurst Farm in the Hope Valley a few times. Not too pricey and has adequate toilets and showers. Pitch away from the railway for a decent night's sleep!
The one near Ashbourne is called callow top and is nice, with playground and a pool if it's sunny. Access on to the Tissington trail which is pleasant enough.
