I am looking to buy a new camera in the next week or so. After a fair bit of research I am going for a Sony NEX 5 - I like the comprimise between functionality & size. I have ruled out a DSLR because of size (I don't think I will want to carry a DSLR with me all the time).
I can stretch to a 2-lens bundle with an 18-55 mm & a 16mm pancake lens but don't know if I should. Are the two lenses necesssary? I don't want to spank cash on a lens I will not use.
Ive recently bought a GF1 with a 20mm pancake lens -after having a good play in the shop I decided the 14-45mm lens just wasn'tr worht it - at those sort of ranges 'I'm happy to walk forward and backwards with the pancake which is a much better lens. I am considering a 14-140mm or a 45-200mm thogh - but I'd say forget the 18-55mm.
Got to remember an 18mm lens on most digital cameras is only equivalent to 28mm on full frame. To get that wide angle look you need to be looking for something below 14mm... I decided to go for a 35mm camera as I don't mind If I break a £40 body, and a rough and tough digital compact. Have to see how this decision pans out...
I've noticed that the bigger/better the lens, the less versatile.
I got a DSLR with 4/3 system, and I thought 'great, I can buy lots of lenses'. Except I have to buy lots of lenses now. Kit lens, then went for a better zoom.. but now I need a macro close-up lens.. and then they make another one with more zoom since I ran out a lot on holiday so I'll want that.. etc etc.
