volvos / skoda estates specifically - assuming a full service history, mileage ok for age of car etc worth looking at?

To be expected for those sort of cars. It'd set alarm bells ringing if it was too low for the age. Go for it, friend of mine has an Audi estate about to hit 300k

I would not let it put you off to be honest.

My 5 series BMW is now 9 years old and has 89k on the clock and drives really well.

The only downside is that it is now at the age/mileage where things like bushes and the suspension start to wear out and need replacing.

Agreed. Check the last big service, especially on an Ovlov. As long as clutch/fanbelt/etc are done, as above - Go for it.

It's not the mileage per se that's important - it's the duty cycle combined with the mileage.

In other words, 50k of town or country lane driving is probably bad as 200k of 70mph motorway in general. We bought a Fiesta off someone that was what 12 years old and had 60k on it. The guy was a farmer and didn't drive much but the car was whipped, we paid £150. Our two cars have 70k on them and are not much different to new - just a few interior scuffs and so on.
