Bit of an incident in the pub over the road tonight - a small fire it appeared to be - maybe in the flat above.

However I don't know what exactly happened - either much more serious than it looked or a quiet night for the local emergency services.

6 fire engines including 2 tall ladder ones. Must be a dozen police cars including ARV I think, 4 ambulances and two major alert control vehicles. 200 m of the road taped off.

I wonder what happened - just pure nosyness

Unusually busy few weeks for one of the services...

Just a normal busy shift for the other two!

😀

Read the paper tomorrow...I wonder who gets all the praise?

Persons reported most likely.

If the person who rings it in isn't a resident, but says that 4 people live there, unless they can all be accounted for, F&R will assume they are in the property. Hence 4 ambulances. tall ladders cos its a first floor flat and they might need window level entry/exit for F&R and residents. Police because it could be fatal, it could be a crime scene and it may be a dangerous scene, needing road closures/evacuations etc.

Might seem overkill, but better to be be overstocked than waiting back up for resources when they're needed.

2 hours later most of them are still here.

Its the sheer number of cops and ambulances - thats a significant proportion of Edinburghs available vehicles I would have thought.

I will find out and report back 🙂

So that's why there were so many then? To be fair to the fireys, they always turn up mob handed to anything..
Agree with Brack, they have the best PR and the comfiest beds.. Actually, the fireys are the only ones with beds..

Come on, you know the water fairies need a little lie down after a hard day at work tiling/plastering or whatever their day job is 😉

TJ, we just don't turn up at an incident cause we're quiet. Resources have to be asked for by incident commander.

Pay [s]freeze [/s] cut for 3 yrs and counting, ****in right I'm going to supplement my income from elsewhere. must be that time of the year for the haterz to be out.

Let's see if there is anything that resembles a fire service once Dave and his mob have finished with us. Off to work for a lie down before my game of snooker and wash my car. Mibbe in the afternoon once I've slept off my 3 course lunch paid for by the tax payer I'll price some jobs whilst watching some films on the sky box.

🙄

Too true mate.. Sometimes I think I joined the wrong service..
To be fair I would rather have too many folk at a job like that than too few!

I'm amazed they found 4 ambulances spare, must have been a quiet night.

The emergency services all do fantastic jobs, and sentences for folk who attack police and ambulance crews who have turned up to incidents cannot be long enough in my book. However, a job where the USP is to go into burning buildings when every human instinct is to get out of them always leaves me 😯

I wasn't being entirely serious. It was the number of cop cars in particular that amused me.

Me too - two major incident vehicles as well I think.

I don't understand why firemen get such a caning, willing to risk death entering flaming buildings to try and rescue people, who gives a monkeys if they supplement their incomes!

Tj,

News story this AM suggests it may have been more serious than twitter suggested last night (or perhaps there is some journalistic license): http://local.stv.tv/edinburgh/news/277248-three-rescued-from-leith-flat-fire/

Either way, I'd say it sounds like a proportionate response to a reasonable sized fire in an old 4 storey building, with multiple persons reported.

Perhaps more police than really necessary - but can you imagine the stories in the press or at a fatal accident inquiry if they sent too few officers! Their role at such an incident is to secure the outer perimeter so that the emergency services have space to work, and nosey buggers from across the road don't put themselves in harms way. Its not a 1 man job to quickly close a bunch to streets. If a mass evacuation was required, because the fire was spreading - they'll do the door knocking. If an ambulance needs escorted through the now chaotic traffic they'll do that, etc. In addition they'll start gathering statements from people involved and then supporting the fire service investigation. The ARV may have been in attendance because my understanding is that they go to any serious incident they are close to to help out, assuming of course there are no firearms incidents at the time. They then quickly try to release themselves so they are free to go play at being in the movies again, without getting tied up in paperwork!

I love the artwork in them old Ladybird books. The chap came from Walsall (I think), they did an exhibition once but I missed it. Have a dozen or so in the attic.

Sorry for going off topique. 🙂
