We are off to Bulgaria in a couple of weeks, which currency do you recommend we should take ? I know they have Levs but often Sterling or Euro's can be more welcome ??

If it's anything like Macedonia, take stirling and convert to whatever is best when you get there. The should get a much better rate than over here.

Its a bit strange. You cannot spend sterling anywhere and nobody wants it anyway. You can spen Euro at a few places, like if you were at the airport and fancied a beer, they will take Euro. Other places will take Euro for big ticket items. You could buy a car or a property with Euro (cash obviously - lol).

So, take a few Euro if you want, but defo have some Levs with you. The amount is up to you, but you will get a better exchange in Bulgaria. Be carefull where you change money, use a bank and make sure you have your passport with you.

Where abouts are you heading to?

Hey Landcruiser,

Me and a couple of mates are heading over to Bansko in three weeks. The advice we've been given is to bring our money in new, Bank of England notes and exchange it over there for Levs. Apparently some banks and hotels will can give up to 20% more than you'd get if you exchanged it here. Just don't give your money to any shady looking characters on the street, or even worse, do what I did in Morocco. You should have seen the look on the bank tellers face when I handed over my Royal Bank of Scotland notes. It didn't bode well for my eating and drinking the rest of that week. 😆

Beagy

I watched a documentary on Bulgaria (it's actually pronounced with a V in the local dialect) and it seems that the current head of state is extremely partial to fancy toys.

The program suggested that taking plenty of good quality and intersting toys could see you go quite far and might even gain you a meeting with the King.

If the docuumentary is accurate then I sincerely hope you don't have children as there is a state funded child catching scheme headed by one of the most horrifying and vile individuals ever to walk this planet.

Good luck.

Have a chat with estate agents who deal there. They will know.

I've got a mate who bought an apartment in Bansko. He's just returned from a skiing trip there and was telling me that they're planning on building a network of mountain bike trails in the area for the summer months.

There is some info here
