We had kitchen redone recently. Extractor fan is fitted with a cheapo loose flap type cover outside. Does a fine job, but that end of the house catches all the wind and the flaps rattle annoyingly and it's very noticeable.

Ideally a cover which releases/opens only when the fans running would be perfect. Some sort of Electro-magnetic latch gizmo? Do they exist? Google (other search engines are available) has not helped.

Don't really want one of the fixed cowl type covers because of the wind/rain on that side of house.

I looked into this (same problem)
Cheap Plan A - http://search.wickes.co.uk/search#w=cowled%20wall%20outlet&asug=

on grounds of cheapness I'm going to give it a try, I'm thinking that it will stop direct wind push on the flaps and hopefully slow down/reduce the amount of blow

I made a little box that went over the top of ours - maybe 5cm out from flaps and it was open to the bottom to stop the rattling.

what kind of ducting?

try an inline back draft valve

The automatic shutter outlets are usually part of the fan itself.
