I'm moving house soon from one side of my estate to the other, but essentially on the same cabinet. I'm with Sky at the moment and when I rang up anbout the home move they informed me that I can't get the usual super fast 36mb i have now and only 6-7mb is available.
Was told to try other providers and after some time checkin theyre all offering the same rubbish speed.
Sky said it could be down to available ports or something at cabinet.
Nobody, can seem to answer the question of if i go with a supplier and one becomes free can I upgrade or will I be forever stuck on 6-7mb?
I’m in a similar position. Recently moved and can only get about 9mb/a even though fttc is available in my area. Ports all full in cabinet. Best they could tell me is that open reach check capacity and upgrade every so often but no idea of timescales. Can either add another card of ports or sometimes a new cabinet is needed
Won't matter who the provider is, if it's FTTC it'll be the same infrastructure managed by Openreach giving your broadband.
You might be connected to the same cabinet, but the run of copper to you house might be 1x/5x/10x longer, it could be going from 300m to 5km - that will most likely be what's limiting speed.
Sounds like you're going to be a long way from the cab hence the poor speeds.
VM would be the other option, if available.

At 36mbps your line length from the cab would have been around 800m, it's now probably over 3km.
The copper lines won't go the direct route, they could go one of many different indirect routes. If you're 'over the other side of the estate' then there ain't gonna be much you can do about your line length.
We get around 25mbps on FTTC which indicates around a 1km line length. The nearest cabinet is 450m away by the fastest road route, or 320m as the crow flies. Can't do anything about it, apart from wait for VM to come to this area.
Use the checker here: https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome
It'll show which cabinet serves the house and the state of various services.
Possible that they've run out of ports (you'll see "waiting list" or similar). It can be that they're either juggling things and some will free up later, or they'll upgrade the kit in the cabinet to have more ports.
