[Closed] British Blue cat breeders.

Hi. Not a british blue breeder but British Shorthair tabby/silver spots. We have one each. Big, fluffy, stupid, affectionate cats. The males are huge too.

at their nutritional research site in Waltham they had a room called "the cuddle room" that 4 or so Of the biggest most beautiful and affectionate British Blue cats I have ever seen.

Tell us more about this. Sounds surreal.

This was over 10 years ago, when I worked for Mars.
The main petfood sites were in Melton and Peterborough.
Waltham was head office and had attatched to it the nutritional research centre.
Absolutely amazing place. Every recipe developement had to be tested on a variety of breeds (dogs especially due to variety od sizes and metabolisms). So the place is set up like a series of sections connected together in like a honeycomb pattern. Each section is separate to avoid risk of infection, and visitors are not allowed to touch the dogs and cats in the centre to avoid infecting them. All animals in the centre get a full and acitive training and play regime (in the courtyards between sections, and other areas).
Because visitors are not allowed to touch most of the animals (to protect the animals from visitors!) they had this one room that visitors could interact, and it had the most fussed over and loving british blues you could imagine. I crouched down to stroke one and another got jealous ans put its paw on my leg to get attention....it felt like a small childs weight being put on me!
Waltham is a brilliant place and is why I still use their products today despite no longer working for the company.

Pets4homes is good, but nothing on there currently, plus a recomendation from the STW hive mind is the best of all recomendations.

I am fairly sure Howard came from a place called Sturt farm in the Cotswolds but that was about 10 years ago. My parents took on a couple of very nice British Blues a year or so ago. I will ask them later where they came from.

The Labrador's in for a shock...

I know! Brilliant.
Our cat was 18 years old when she died recently, so she was too old to be bothered with a giddy labrador.
When our cat was younger she grew up with (and outlived) our previous dogs. She had those dogs VERY well trained, and both of our old dogs were on call as heated catbeds when needed.
Now we have a new-ish dog, that has never realised that a dogs tail is the best cats plaything EVER. I really look forwards to a cat that can put the final aspect of the dogs training into place.

We recently lost out BB 'Puddle', by a mile our top cat yet! BB are such great cats, real charaters, he was always in eyesight of me, never any trouble, huge cat in every way.

Worst (but prettiest) cat I have ever owned. cost a fortune and was moody, unaffectionate and totally dismissive, was totally unaffected by her passing. rubbish cat.

Her Son on the other hand was the best cat I have had to date. he died a few weeks ago at 18. rip tom x

The breeders above have a hairless sphinx cat, fantastic personality almost non-catlike.
However for us we want a big lazy pampered cat. Our labrador has enough playfulness for the family!

If it's the colour you like how about a blue oriental? We used to have one until his kidneys packed in. Siamese and orientals have bags more personality than British shorthairs. He looked exactly like this..

Blue colour is nice but I like cats to have short fur with slightly chubby build, not fat. Thin ones can be too boney for me. I also like them to have big heads. Siamese cats are fine but if they have rounder or bigger heads that will be very nice. Black is nice too. 🙂

We were in a similar situation a few weeks ago, our cat of 21 had to be put down and we lasted a couple of days before going to look for another kitten.

The wife had said I could have a British Blue ever since we watched "Cats & Dogs", although that is a Russian Blue I think.

But when it came to it she said she didn't like the dark blue color 🙁

So we went to see some amber british shorthair kittens which were cute but didn't grab me.

The next day we went to see some more british shorthair kittens, some of which were blue/white, some blue, some tortoiseshell, etc.

Later that day we went to see a lilac shorthair, born from a blue tortoiseshell mum and a blue dad, who was a big bruiser of a cat.

the lilac looks blue sometimes, and brown at others, depending on the background, so is a good compromise (!)

Ty is chubby enough around the face to have that same sort of look that a british blue has - which I was keen on as everytime I look at a British Blue I can't help smiling as they look slightly 'comical'.

He is now 20 weeks and we have had him for only 4 weeks.

He is fantastic fun with a great personality - I got home late from work yesterday and the wife was complaining that he had been waiting for me, looking out of the window.

I went upstairs to change and he came up and jumped on the bed ready for a play - I use a laser to get to to run repeatedly around the bed to the point where he stops and pants - not sure if that is good or not...

He goes really hyper a couple of times a day - normally just as we are trying to go to sleep, but maybe that will reduce when his nads are cut off in a couple of weeks 🙁

We got him at 16 weeks, which is slightly longer than normal as most breeders seem to let them go at 12/13 weeks.

Having seen the other kittens I would say that it is not worth going to see them until they are close to that 12 weeks as they have less 'personality' evident from which to judge whether they are right for you.

But having said that, Ty was pretty nervous of us when we met him, although he was calm and slept in the box on my wifes lap as we brought him home a few hours later, but he isn't nervous now and was at home almost immediately. But we could see his confidence, whereas we couldn't really with the younger kittens.

We are feeding him on Natural Instinct cat food :

and also some Honeys, which is 95% meat, compared to whiskers at something like 4%.

His toilet is much better and his coat is softer than the softest thing you can think of, so it was definitely worth it.

Just curious - would a British Blue be suited to outdoor life, and are they good hunters of rabbits etc?

I didn't notice the age of this thread, but it is worth looking at that cat food as it seems that a lot of cat ailments are down to the grain based foods they are eating.
