But its ruining my Radio 6 listening for the day.

Same here. I know it's BBC but still taken back that they've interrupted the scheduled programming

Suspect there's some govt sychophancy flag shagging going on

Unfortunately this is a prime issue that'll get subsumed into culture war

Nurses' pay or flags and bangs to honour a life-long parasite and racist? I bet Starmer is already polishing his hair.

Does seems to have ****ed up the music choice on the radio. Reminds me of when they canceled all Saturday morning cartoons when Princess Diana was killed.

Suspect there’s some govt sychophancy flag shagging going on

A co-incidence that 2 weeks ago UK Gov ordered all public buildings to fly the Union Jack?

I did write to the TPA a while back about an entire family on benefits who live in a massive state funded house...funny how it's okay for some and not others though, isn't it. I'd be quite happy to see the monarchy abolished along with the gongs and privilege that goes along with it.

To be fair to Phil, he did fight Nazis though, there's that in his favour.

I think even Phil would have drawn the line at the swastika, though.

I'm looking forward to seeing the govt turning away from northern Ireland for the next few weeks and focussing on those UK hating liberals who are showing insufficient deference.

A very old and privileged person has died.

Not going to argue but there is another version of that.

A lifelong public servant, one of the few remaining WW2 Veterans and loved family member has died. Someone in the public eye for everyone's lifetime, that is why people GAF.

This is a huge opportunity to bury/ignore/hide bad news for the Government.

Is it too soon to quote one of my favourite David Badiel sketches...

'The Duke of Edinburgh scheme - what's that all about. Does being Greek, shouting at foreigners and never shagging your wife get you a gold award...'

Old man dies of being really old shocker. Feel for his family but it’s very OTT.

A million times this.

You have to envy De Pfeffel's sheer luck, at least.

A public servant?

How much money and resources has he took from the UK in his 99 years?

Imagine being the Queen and realizing that you're going to have to put up with Johnson wiffle-waffing at you on behalf of the government. Christ, she must have the patience of Job

Just as there was some genuine pressure building on fat wad. Now he can do a statesman address with his sad face on and repeatedly back scuttle a union jack and use it for wiping up

Wait, does this mean an income tax reduction is on the way?

I think one or two of you claiming he was a life long parasite living a life of privileged luxury might want to learn a little bit of history, his early years weren't and he actively served in WWII with distinction. Even after marrying the queen he used his privileged position to work for the country and has left a legacy in the DoE award amongst other things. He was a product of his times, yes a casual racist but many of his generation were. I bet our grand kids will look back on many of us as casually homophobic or unable to understand transgender issues (or indifferent to climate change).

He'll have his moment in the news cycle, whether people like it or not he has had a big part in the this country for the last 80 years. He's done a lot more than some of the Royals (Andrew for example and probably Harry if he continues in his current path, or God forbid even Diana).

Good innings, let the Beeb have it's week or two of mawkish sentiment and then we can all move on.

I imagine she thinks he is a ****, just like most people with more than two brain cells do.

But she has to stay apolitical (and I imagine she is pretty happy with that given the forces these current strokers have unleashed in our society).

Its insane how he rides his luck. Surely surely it has to end at some point.

If the old man wasnt 99 yo then I'd be buying into Johnson's shadowy backers offing him in order to divert all the attention away from all this trouble in the provinces

it’s very OTT.

It's really not. He was the Queen's Consort for decades, in a country that has a very visible and active Monarchy. The marking of his passing in this way is exactly as you would expect for a figure of that seniority. Other countries do similar when their Heads of State die.

What you are arguing about is whether we should have a monarchy at all, or if so what role and significance they should have in the life of the UK. But I'd say that's a discussion for another day, we do, and right now a figurehead of it has passed away.

As well as a father, grandfather and great grandfather.

, his early years weren’t

Even if that’s true and I’m not sure he was on the breadline, educated at Gordonstun (sp?) etc, he certainly made up for it.

Err....it’s already been said but, Bargain Hunt FFS.

Exactly as you would expect, not me, I think it’s a bit much and that’s why I said so. Opinions and all that

Racist old rich man dies. Meh.

But

the legacy he leaves through the Duke of Edinburgh Award will live on.

You know he had bugger all to really do with that, don't you? Other than giving out the awards.

It's comments like this which make me laugh:

Just glad they waited until after “Homes under the Hammer” to break the news

😀

Swanning about on a battleship in the Indian Ocean. Loads of able seamen in the merchant fleet (ie delivering food and gold for the war effort, largely unarmed and unprotected) were sunk or 'discharged at sea' with no pay and certainly no medals, to get to shore and then back home if they were lucky. That's the history.

What @stumpyjon said.

How long now before the Queen hands over to Charles? And how long will he serve before handing over to Wills?

RIP and condolences to the family

Hopefully it will all fall apart long before Wills gets a look in

Hopefully.

I'd strip them of everything and point them in the direction of the nearest job centre. See how far they could climb on their own merits.

No, not under current 'protocol' anyway.

Best we can hope for is Queen abdicating (it's been hinted) then we'd get a day off for the coronation of King Charles, or even King William.

So, if it happens, where is everyone going to ride on their extra day off?

I liked him - RIP. Maybe it’s because I’m rapidly turning into the embarrassing drunk uncle in my own right!

As for Bargain Hunt - I’ve gone off it these days - how do they manage to find people with such a penchant for losing money FFS!

Just been on twitter, what is nauseating is that those commentators who might well be ambivalent about the death of any member of the royal family, aside from their death being a personal tragedy, have to be over effusive in their condolences cos they're so scared about the right coming after them. But the 'right' aren't necessarily that fussed about personal tragedy but it's now a culture war issue

So you get a nuclear arms race of condolences and grieving where each side of the culture war has to outdo the other but it's the 'right' who are on the offensive as it's their war

What a load of bollox.

You are ignoring the fact that they generate over £400 million for the economy per anum

Do you actually think that would happen? You can strip them off all their titles etc, even turf them out of any publicly owned buildings, if there are any and they might even thank you. If you're talking about actually taking property they own like some kind of French Revolutionary, how long do you think it would take them to earn more? Shit the bed, if Kardashians can claim to be billionaires and be close enough that some people believe them, how much do you think 'Brand Royal' is worth?

No, they won't be signing on any time soon.

But its ruining my Radio 6 listening for the day.

The reason for the BBC approach is that only a certain number of staff (my brother being one of them!) are trained to broadcast during a Cat 1 Royal Death and deal with all the live role-ins and protocols. My brother has been carrying around the scripts in his bag for the last 2 years (he did just dash into work, but they found enough people in the building who hadn't just woken up after 4 hours of sleep post nights!). On radio, 5-live have the experience of dealing with complex live broadcasting and therefore they take over (with radio 4 presenters); same with BBC Newsroom for TV.
