Anyone had glasses made with any of the branded lenses available? E.g. Nikon or Essilor.
I have a simple single vision prescription and I’m particularly interested in the ‘Crizal Forte’ lenses made by Essilor that seem to have a 2 year no-scratch guarantee on them. That sounds like it would be worth a lot to me as I tend to scratch my glasses quite quickly one way or another (without having any idea how).
Anyone got these lenses or know anything about them? The terms & conditions doc on their site is a broken link so I can’t look at it - is the guarantee worth the paper it’s written on or does it have a long list of daft exceptions like ‘a scratch is defined as being wider than 1mm and the lenses must have been purchased from an authorised retailer, of which there is one, based in Outer Mongolia.’?
Where do you get them from anyway? Whenever I’ve looked in Vision Express or other independent opticians, I’ve never seen anything like this offered. Do you have to ask specifically? Or are these branded lenses what they refer to simply as ‘premium 1.67’ or ‘elite 1.74’ etc? I know the numbers refer to the refractive index/thickness but different coatings are usually offered as well.
I generally buy mine online with cheap plastic lenses and get years out of them before the lenses scratch. Frames normally need work first eg my current GANT glasses are held together with Araldite after the hinge screws failed...
I have them in my 2 pairs, both varifocals, from local optician. I used the 2 yr sratch thing earlier this yr after an off at the Velodrome where the right lens rubbed along the boards for about 3m 😳 while still attached to my face....
Worth the extra if you have an expensive prescription IMO

Nuff said really
Shamir lenses are very good, I have them in a pair of RayBan Lennons frames, mine have DriveWear photo-reactive tint, multipoint varifocal and multilayer AR coating, are around two years old now, worn every day during the week, and weekends during the winter, when I don't wear contacts, and haven't got a mark on them so far.
The AR coating seems to be particularly hard wearing.
Really very, very impressed with them.
Always have branded lenses - often Zeiss or Nikon. TBH my specs always cost a fortune due to my insistence on decent quality optics and frames that look good on me.
Because my duff eyesight is worth it....
Been doing some calling around and apparently you can get whatever lenses you want from pretty much any optician, you just have to know exactly what it is you want and ask for it specifically.
Dunno whether to get 1.67 or 1.74 index. Any disadvantages to 1.74 other than the price?
