I'm glad that now most threads don't end in a pointless slanging match.
Working with ladies in a mostly ladies shop STW is my daily portal of all the rubbish that blokes talk about.
Rate my brickie being a top example.

GW's been banned for speaking plain english

He was a tit. He didn't speak in plain English, more in riddles. He never explained what his issue was and just attacked posters. No loss in my eyes. Where as I didn't agree with much of what TJ said but I do miss his dogish presence.

I quite liked surfmatt but missed his flounce, does anybody have a link?

Who was GW btw?

Got the impression he was known to quite a few folk.

Not sure how to answer that really, those are his initials

Yeah, I'd worked that one out ๐Ÿ˜€

Just wondered if he was some sort of industry big cheese on a trolling spree.
Some people seemed to show him a level of respect his posts hardly warranted.

Nah - he's just a dude that lives in East Lothian. Maybe you mistook "respect" for "also taking the piss".

No I don't think so.

Maybe his attitude intimidated people.
Easily done.

Most folk that GW didn't troll were his mates in real life, where (now this may come as a surprise) he's quite different (yes I get the irony).

Who was it that flounced and re-appeared a week or so later?

Most flouncers. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'm still surprised at the number of "regulars" whose name only ever appears in the Chat forum and wonder why they chose STW as a medium for their spleen-venting.

I don't know if I count as regular but the reason why I'm practically never in the bike forum is because I practically never change anything on my bike so rarely need to ask or discuss anything!

What happened to iDave?

He allegedly went on holiday with his customer's money rather than supplying the goods/services.
He was efficiently hunted down and tongue-lashed for a couple of weeks before deciding to hide again or getting banned [not sure which]

No idea if everyone eventually got their money back or not.

Oooh missed all that. Thought he was all about diets so never read any posts.

TBH a few people have sent me stomping off with my arms folded.

Weren't there some girly flouncers a while back accusing everyone of misogyny?

Think the last flounce was live2ride426, not as orsumz as some but still entertaining.

He is still about, last seen on twitter selling coaching services

Why did TSY get a lifetime ban...I know he's been banned before, but life seems a bit harsh...it's only words ๐Ÿ™„

depends on if he lives past another 1000years or not really... good chance considering his 1.3% body fat.

+1, a complete dick! His style was to just say to everyone "you're a loser, I know, because I'm not a loser, you just can't handle the truth".

Sure (well, I'm not, but y'know) he was charming in real life, but definitely the most objectionable person I've ever seen on here.

Great rider by all accounts, most of which were his.

hmmm agree with njee apart from one bit.... jedi said he was by far the fastest rider he'd had round his field of dreams IIRC.

Typical GW post;
Thread titled "best dropper post?"
GW reply 'they're all cr@p and if you think you need one you don't know how to ride, whereas I am a riding god".

Replace dropper with gloves, armour, etc ad nauseam and you have his entire posting history. If he WAS a riding god he did everyone a disservice by not sharing useful opinion and insight, only attitude.

TSY is a really nice unassuming guy in real life which is probably the way with many trolls.

I always thought that GW spoke a lot of sense once you got past ire. Seem to remember 160mm forks on a hardtail being his particular bugbear.

LOL - That's him! ๐Ÿ˜†

GW is, and I've known him reasonably well over the years, a really nice bloke - and he is one of the best riders I've known. Knows lots about bike mechanics and kit, too.

But he does come across the wrong way... and is not known for tact or diplomacy. His habit of posting his opinion on my opinion, rather than his opinion of the original subject matter, did soon become very tiring, though..!

You'd never guess what he does for a living, though.

Surely having a flounce would suggest that you spend far too much time on STW and take it a bit too seriously?

Child minder IIRC.

IME, inoffensive and polite IRL.

As above, if he's the expert rider claimed, I'd have a lot more respect if he'd been helpful here rather than just tell folk how crap they were.

Everyone in the history of flouncing, I think.

As for GW, I don't know him IRL but I rode past him once and he didn't fling his own poo at me, so I take that as proof that he's nicer in the real world than on the internet.

People who are awesome generally don't need to tell people.

Like say for instance, TSY, absolutely amazing rider. I've eaten his dust.

STW: you'll come for the biking, you'll stay for the bollocks.

I can't remember the exact circumstances around me joining, I think maybe my OH was a member first and put me on to it. I use the bike forum for questions occasionally, but I rarely read it (unless it's a really slow Internet day). TBH, most of it is over my head.

I found though that the chat forum has a good mix of people with diverse skillsets and at least some degree of intelligence. I've had some interesting discussions on here, and some lively debates, and whilst STW isn't unique in this regard it's certainly unusual.

My 'other' haunt is Mono and I always used to say about (jokingly) it that whilst we might get the occasional nob, we do at least get a better class of nob. Ie, you might sometimes get someone argumentative for instance, but they're coherently argumentative and relatively intelligent, rather than the "bottom half of the Internet" commonly found using LOL in lieu of punctuation on YouTube comments and Facebook. STW, I think, is very much in the same mould as Mono in this regard; it has a good "feel" to it. I guess I'll forgive a good deal of ****tishness if it's in actual sentences. (-:

As for the flouncers and banees;

Flouncing is a mixed bag. Sometimes it's a loss when someone feels that they are forced into leaving a community, and sometimes it's really for the best all round. In some ways, it can be a braver and more difficult move to walk away than to stick around. I'd like to think that we're generally a welcoming bunch.

The bans, well. I'm not going to mention names, but there's a couple who I think the place is vastly better without, and a couple who I think are a sad loss to the forum.

It's a fine line, I suppose, between the regular in the pub who's a local 'character' and has enough likeable qualities that you're happy to overlook their irritations, and the one who's braying so loudly every night that new customers are walking in the door and straight out again and even the regulars are starting to think 'bugger this, I'm off to the Rose & Crown.'

Plus one for me as well. Even when I do want something it's a personal choice and there's really very little to be gleaned anymore from a bike forum. Just think of all the "what tyre" or "which xc running shoe" threads.

I disagree, there's quite a few threads where people simply can't fathom what it is they need to fit or do various things, e.g. headsets are a flaming nightmare to figure out with some frames.
There's usually someone here that's sorted the puzzle and has answers.

Sorry, I didn't mean in general. I meant specifically in my case. I just hardly ever have any bike questions any more.

some of GW comments were pretty rubbish ๐Ÿ™ he was pretty rude to both me and Sue W a while back, and that wasn't cool.

banning TSY and Don was rubbsh as well, they were pretty funny.

the bike bit can be pretty scary TBH

There's a lot of knowledgable folk on the bike forum, and I don't think I'd want to ask questions here if I was a proper newbie, bit intimidating. BikeRadar is far better for that. But then if I wanted to know the finer points on certain carbon rims, or damping set ups I'd never ask BR.
