sideline alert but Steph McGovern was on R4 Room 101 with Paul Merton last week (very good, if you want to iPlayer it) and this - or rather Vox pops in general - was one of her proposals. As a TV journalist having to go out to gather opinions on a public matter of the day and trying to find balance, while knowing the only person who could possibly hold a different opinion was the drunk bloke sat on the bench shouting at pigeons.
And so you spend the afternoon desperately asking people what they think, as deadline gets closer for your live to air piece, and of course they all agree with each other because it's the only sensible opinion to hold. And you just know that finally live on BBC news you'll be forced to interview him and your career is again going to be reduced to a gif or meme.
We're getting beyond that level now.
Edit: clearly more than enough for one article a day!

The Boris-supporting senile old racists that make up the Tory membership, no doubt egged on by Ree-Smug, Mad Nad and Co, are now threatening their MPs with deselection if they vote for the report on Monday
There’s more fun and games to come yet.
Who’d bet against an interview with the oversexed honey monster in the Mail on Sunday or the Torygraph with pages of self-pitying, boo-hoo, poor me, ITS SO NOT FAIR bullshit. I’d say it’s nailed on
Is deselection that big a delay given most of them will probably lose their seats at the next election anyway? I'm hoping lots of tories vote to uphold the 90 day suspension and then step down as MP's immediately.
Where's Rishi? Isn't he allegedly steering the wheel of this clown car of a government ?
Too scared to rock the boat is my bet. He knows what side his bread is buttered on.
as a committee properly constituted and elected according to Parliament rules, is calling it a kangaroo court not in itself contempt of (an official body of) parliament.
It's up to the MP's to decide if the recommended sanctions are correct, and to vote for or against (or abstain) as they think is right, but who further decides if members are allowed to criticise in terms like these? Is it up to someone to report them to the Privileges and Standards committee.
I'd like the speaker to grow a pair (as he might have started to a few weeks back) and invite those that have used such inappropriate language to withdraw it forthwith. When others have to dance around actually calling Johnson's lies lies, this absolutely doesn't sit right.
Johnathan pie has put the boot in on YouTube it's a bit naughty so won't link it
Interesting headlines in the papers tjis morning, I think the Daily Star is winning.
The sacrificial Tory on last nights QT was struggling not to say he would vote in favour of the report, presumably he had his orders.
Somone in the Tories needs to grow a pair and say that due process has found him guilty and he'll have to take a punishment. Pandering to the Boris supporting grass roots is just moral cowardice from the party of personal responsibility, and enables his like to keep coming back.
But it does give the Opposition a huge stick to beat them with.
I got the impression from the papers headlines this morning that the mail and torygraph et al, are desperately trying to magnify/create some sort of rebellion that doesn't actually exist (in any substantial sense), giving the few last Boris supporters megaphones to try and scare MP's into supporting him.
Presumably the Mail’s new columnist is connected to their main front page story in some way…

Are the Mail now an anti Tory party? They are going to be putting the boot into Sunak every chance they get.
Hopefully the start of the wilderness years for the scumbags,
Are the Mail now an anti Tory party?
All previous political affiliations are dead. Unfortunately, We now have to filter everything through the prism of that thing that happened in 2016. The B word. Its a cult
As far as the nutjobs on the Tory backbenches, the rabid anti-EU right wing press and the elderly racist fruitloops that make up the membership are concerned, you're either a pro-Brexit 'Spartan' or you're a pinko, lefty traitor who hates Britain!!
Boris is their hero as he was the anti-EU poster boy who 'Got Brexit Done' (allegedly) and has remained confrontational towards the EU (no surrender!).
Rishi is viewed with suspicion because, despite being a leaver, he isn't trying to pick a fight with Brussels every five minutes. Even Kemi Badenoch is now viewed as a non-believer after rowing back from the more insane Brexit position once in the cabinet
I see my prediction yesterday that Boris would be writing for the Mail or the Torygraph by the weekend has come to pass already. This lot are nothing if not predictable. He'll be back in his comfort zone. Throwing hand grenades at all and sundry and the Brexiteer morons will lap it up
Unfortunately for them, their going 'Full Trump' on this isn't washing with the wider electorate. Outside of the hardcore nutters (see above) nobody is buying their 'wronged hero brought down by a conspiracy' bullshit. Latest polling shows 68% of those polled believe Johnsons punishment is fair or it should have been even harsher, so if Johnson thinks he's going to be leading some popular uprising then he's absolutely delusional
The B word. Its a cult
There's another B word (Boris) where you only need a minor spelling adjustment...
Jonathan Pie used the description very poetically in his most recent video. 😉
Are the Mail now an anti Tory party?
The Tory-supporting papers are in a difficult position. Everyone now knows for certain that he's a liar who lies about his lies which sort of indicates that (whisper it) Brexit might just have been based on a pack of lies too so to be asking stuff like "is there a way back for Boris?" and trying to debate the vote on this as though "should the Prime Minister lie to Parliament?" is a valid question is a very strange place to be putting your newspaper.
They've been stitched up by him just as much as everyone else but some are still in denial about it. They supported him and Brexit and trumpeted his lies about Covid across their pages and now, like everyone else in Boris's narcissistic life, they've been dumped right in the shitty aftermath.
Someone very pointedly asked on QT last night that if Borus had lied about this, maybe he'd lied about Brexit it too.
They kind of glossed over it.
But worth watching for Ghutto(sp) Hari's stomach churning fawning over his wronged former employer
But worth watching for Ghutto(sp) Hari’s stomach churning fawning over his wronged former employer
John Crace said about Boris and those who slavishly follow him that he would come round and shag their wife while they were out and they'd end up apologising for not having changed the sheets for him
That quote came to mind when listening to that idiots embarrassing sycophancy on QT last night, even now refusing to acknowledge that his (frankly inexplicable) hero might not be entirely honest
From Politico:
Bombshell: That sound you hear is dozens of lemons being sucked inside No. 10. That other sound you hear is dozens of Daily Mail hacks rustling through their contracts seeking clauses to get them out of being the sap who has to knock BoJo’s homework crisis copy into shape.
haha, Boris has had tell all* his supporters not to vote against the advice to suspend him presumably becasue he's come to the obvious conclusion it'll reveal just how few there are in the Commons that do, and they've come to the conclusion that 2/3 of the population think he's a lying toerag and both the Sun and Times (i.e. Murdoch) has come out against him so it'll make them look [even more] out of touch.
*yes, all 7 of them...
Yup. Like his decision not to fight the byelection. He doesnt want reality to get in the way of him being the "election winner".
I hope Acoba will tell him he has to wait before taking up the job.
Its official

He's avoiding writing about politics, apparently, so the readership of the Daily Heil can look forward to articles about letterboxes, bum boys and piccaninnies to satisfy their right wing reactionary tendencies instead
I don't think ACOBA can block it, or even give a punishment, only give public rebukes, like he'll care.
Interestingly

so can hardly claim he didn't know, just absolutely DGAS
Its official
He knows his audience.

Was trying to work out from the BBC report whether the oppposition can force a vote, just to reveal who the headbangers truly are. I think that would be an interesting tactic.
He knows his audience.
Indeed. I reckon the venn diagram of people still defending Boris Johnson and readers of the Daily Heil will be a perfect circle
We (wife and I) have been seriously considering not selling the daily fail and express in our shop, contractually we have to though, I'm wondering how long it would take to red flag at the distributor that we've returned all copies.....

Shred them and sell them as hamster bedding?
Hopefully he'll take that right wing comic down with him as he falls down the relevance scale.
How can you go from PM to this job in a year? Is this just ignoring more rules and conventions that apply to everyone else but not him?
Hopefully they'll allow comments to his articles (crayon rants) on line.
It would have been extremely out of character if his parting gesture hadn’t broken the ministerial code (again)
I’d also say that the Mail is stretching it a bit describing him as ‘one of the wittiest and most original writers in the business’
Yeah, only if all you’ve ever read is the Daily Mail
Johnson’s first column for the Mail…
“I like snacking to excess, while telling people I’m watching what I eat, and they should as well”
“Pretending to go jogging isn’t making me any fitter”
“None of the drugs work on me anymore, my body has become immune to chemical interference”
[ obviously I’ve not actually read his column, for one thing… it’s in the F****** Daily Mail ]
It's a nice topping for all that whining about Sue Gray isn't it?
Good point Northwind… and she isn’t even starting the new job ‘till the agreed appropriate period has passed.
Are Tory MPs as deluded as Boris Johnson? It’s a tough act to follow
If I had to bet either way, I would bet they are.
I see my prediction yesterday that Boris would be writing for the Mail or the Torygraph by the weekend has come to pass already.
This is only phase one. The Telegraph is for sale. Rothermere probably wants it. How do you like Johnson as "editor-in-chief" of the Telly and columnist for the Daily Mail?
PS employing someone as a columnist is a great way to inject extra cash into their pockets in a plausible manner.

Look at what we have become.
Trying to 'understand' the right is pointless. They don't care about the rules, they never have.
Rational debate is useless. They despise our democracy and hold our post war values in contempt.
Time for action.
I'm with you, Rusty, apart from I'm non-violent and in any case would fold like a cheap suit in a proper fight anyway.
But I absolutely ****ing despair at what a small but significant minority can do to the rest of society. The above is one example, just sheer "DGAF about rules, they're for the others, not us" attitude. Getting told off in public and not allowed to be an MP again, and then given a platform and ££££'s most of us can only dream of to carry on exactly the same. £££'s that are coming from the small but significant minority that buy the papers and lap it up. Like I said I'm not violent but I easily see how it can get to looking like justice is only finally at the end of a rope.
This one has really boiled my piss
https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/trans-row-pride-month-wickes-ceo-outrage/
Short version - Wickes had a float at Pride that supported the LGB, and specifically the T community. The usual suspects, JHB, Sharon Davies, Laurence Fox, GBNews, etc., are now all calling for a boycott. Wickes CEO came out and basically said 'fine, their choice, not really welcome in our stores with that attitude anyway' and it's all escalated with Wickes losing 4% value on the back of this boycott.
I'm hoping B&Q, Homebase, Screwfix, whoever else all come out and say that frankly they're not welcome here either - and when I finally manage to get the balls to start taking action I'll know what houses to petrol bomb because they'll be the ones with peeling paint because there's not a DIY store in the land they can use (not serious! at least not yet)
I'm worried about his call to to his supporters to not vote against the report's findings. I can guarantee he's done it so that he can mount a legal challenge to the sanctions later, paving a way for him to somehow slither back in.

I'm the same but for Johnson I could quite readily have a bloody good go at kicking seven bells of shit out of him (internet hard man words, I would most likely just call him a ****er from a few metres away).
