Which bit of it, exactly?

'Suppressed the Russia Report'. Chair of the committee that drew it up says he did, personally (Dominic Grieve).

'Rolling in Russian Cash'. The extent of Russian donations to the Conservative Party is well documented

'Failed to Sanction Abramovich'. I don't think this is even contentious. He hasn't.

There is nothing particularly defamatory about the tweet, and certainly nothing actionable. It's also quite hard to suffer reputational damage when you have a well-established reputation as a liar, as Johnson does. Also he doesn't have the cash for expensive libel actions, especially now the taps have been turned off to his party.

Which fact are you calling out as wrong @cheddarchallenged, or are you just smearing around a bit of vague distrust in a journalist to defend the PM?

If there's anything that the events of the past couple of weeks have taught us (if we didn't already know), is that Carole Cadwalladr has been right about a lot of stuff, despite some dedicated and well-funded efforts to smear her as a 'crazy cat lady'. The current libel action against her is tenuous in the extreme.

I suspect that not for the first time Carole Cadwalladr may find herself in court with that tweet above

Yeah… Good luck with finding a lawyer to pursue that one, given what facts are in the public domain

I think you might only find one taker for that brief

Thing with UK libel / slander laws is even if you win you only get damages in proportion to the damage to your reputation.  As Johnson is a known liar and philanderer he has no reputation to be ruined 🙂  damages would be 1p.  Plenty of cases of this happening.

A decent gag appeared in the comments section of a Danny Finkelstein leader in The Times today:

An aide to Boris Johnson quipped about the Ukraine president, on Friday 25 February 2022: “Who would have thought that a former chat-show host would turn into a statesman of great principle and stature.”

Then, much to the PM’s chagrin and annoyance, the aide joked candidly and tellingly: “It wouldn’t happen here!”

If you have access to The Times btw, DF's article is excellent IHMO and worth reading.

I suspect that not for the first time Carole Cadwalladr may find herself in court with that tweet above.

Unless she’s got proof it’s straight forward defamation – and given her track record of getting quite basic facts wrong it could get expensive. You’d think that a competent journalist would have the nouse to differentiate actual facts from allegations…

See: https://order-order.com/people/carole-cadwalladr/

I see you've linked to Guido Fawkes, a right-wing blogger with an unhealthy interest in Cadwalladr. This has nothing to do of course with his pro-Brexit views or her expose of Cambridge Analytica.

Depends how much you are willing to pay.
There has been a long history of millionaires/billionaires using libel laws to silence their critics in the UK court.
Look at the various cases against Private Eye in the past or more recently and highly applicable to the Russian question the oligarchs libel cases against Catherine Belton and Harper Collins (the suing her personally as well as the publisher seems to be a new favoured trick used against Cadwalladr as well).

Look at the various cases against Private Eye in the past

IIRC they have never lost a libel case and the threat of it does not shut them up - see Arkell V Pressdram

tj - the Eye have lost a few libel cases; that small number is a tiny proportion of the number of cases brought against them.

They have done eg Maxwell and the fat "cheque for the fat Czech" quip, Goldsmith and several others. Some of those cases came very very close to bankrupting them as well with them running appeals to readers to cover legal costs.
Yes Private Eye and a few others will take the risk but a lot of journalists, writers and publishers
will decide its not worth the risk and expense.

Well Abramovic doesn't need to be in any hurry to offload Chelski. He's got 18 months to get is ill-gotten gains out of the country. I presume the same applies to the rest of them.

'Honest Bob' Jenrick was interviewed on Radio 4 at lunchtime and even he thought that was probably a bit much

Imagine how dodgy it has to be for Robert Jenrick (the man who didn't bat an eyelid about taking a bung to let Richard Desmond off with millions in tax) to balk at it. They really are utterly, totally and unashamedly corrupt

You level that accusation at her using a Guido Fawkes piece as 'evidence' ? Irony much?

Given how the UK population seems to be mostly pro-Ukraine, allegations like this have to be pretty bad news for Johnson surely?

@cheddarchallenged

You might want to check the details of Banks libel trial against Carole- has been something of an own goal, whatever the outcome
Its revealed that he cant/won't disclose where he got the money he donated to vote leave from via his mysterious diamond mines in africa
Even more fascinating was the fact that his wife entered the country on a passport sequentially numbered to one used by a known honeypot spy the UK had deported for targeting a British MP
Exactly as the skripal poisoners did.
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/honey-im-trapped-in-russia-n79s85679k5

Meanwhile Banks has been tweeting in support of Putins war!!

It’s clear that in “leading the world” on sanctions, the UK government is really dragging its heels and giving identified banks, businesses and individuals space and time to work around sanctions before they eventually kick in…

PM Boris Johnson told to explain why crackdown on Russian ‘dirty money’ will take 18 months

If you want to see how quickly the Tories can impose sanctions when they want to, try turning up a few minutes late to an appointment at the JobCentre.

How the **** can Gavin Williamson be awarded a knighthood? What has he done in secret that deserves such an accolade, or what has be got on Johnson? This is the incompetent who presided over exams debacle after being sacked as Defence Secretary for alleged leak?? Our country is rotten to the core!

He apparently has loads of dirt on Johnson and when he was sacked, this was his pay off to keep his mouth shut. He may be utterly useless at everything else but he was supposedly excellent as chief whip, digging up dirt on people

He was hardly subtle about it either. Note the book, which apparently lists where the bodies are buried, complete with an actual whip, placed prominently in this toe-curling photo that even Instagram Liz might consider a bit much

It’s just more blatant corruption. They don’t even make any attempt to justify it any more

Arise Sir Frank Spencer

It's also another Boris deadcat to deflect from the shit job he's doing on Russian money

It's seriously time for some civil disobedience, I've had enough.

Maybe it'll be treated like one of the exam results he presided over and downgraded to a Blue Peter badge in a few weeks time.

There's actually more integrity in a blue Peter badge than there is in a knighthood these days.

I'm not surprised.

Though I'm becoming a bit concerned that all this shit is sticking to Boris and the wider Tory party will escape the reckoning.

Why would Johnsomn have to worry about having a laugh dishing out the honours? Is he likely to get any grief from Sir Kief?

Mail reporting Johnson's 6 point plan for Ukraine puts him as leader of the global response.

It puts him as the cheerleader for the global response as it seems largely to be a list of commitments other people should make

Gotta larf thou how a newly ‘sovereign’ nation who have thrown off the shackles of E.U. Oppression seem to very slow to actually implement sanctions(whereas Germany seems to have nabbed a boat), the law they mumble which is an odd thing to say as they make the laws and could pretty rapidly implement one overnight.

He could have him arrested for treason. Apparently that's all the rage in some Eastern European countries 😉

(whereas Germany seems to have nabbed a boat),

Yup, they missed a trick there and in need of a Royal Yacht. Could have killed 2 birds with one stone. Free 160m megayacht with all the trimmings, one extremely pissed off oligarch owner. Bought from new.

Saved a fortune. Probably has gold taps and slave accommodation for 50.

Hopefully Putin will reward him for his cheerleading by releasing a shedload of kompromat. I hadn't realised Carrie was a founder member of the Conservative Friends of Russia group...

Kompromat

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-60638289

Sir Keir Starmer has called for a senior parliamentary committee to investigate claims Boris Johnson pushed for a Russian-born businessman to get a peerage, despite security concerns.
