I've got a few things I want to wall mount in my garage, up until now most things have been attached directly into the block work with wall anchors individually. I was thinking to make the process a little easier and more open to tweaks down the line I could get a sheet or 2 of 18mm ply (cut down to suit) and attached using throughbolts. I could then fit hooks or whatever using woodscrews, for heavier stuff I could take the board off and pop a nut & bolt through a pre drilled hole. I'd space the throughbolts with washers to give the board ~10mm stand-off to factor in the uneaven surface of the wall. Has anyone done anything similar and have any thoughts/lessons/regrets they can share?
hmm apparently I should be using chemical/reisin anchors for block work...
Breeze blocks? If so they're a total ball-ache to work with. Still working out the best things myself and considering backing up some hooks i already have with a chemical fixing (also wondering if No More Nails would work as a bit of a bodge) as they're holding up a fairly heavy bike rack
Would it not be easier to fix a couple of batons to the wall and then fix the board to the batons? Then you don't have issue with uneven wall and having to use washers on every throughbolt?
Horizontal batons would be more flexible, because you could screw ply to them if you have a lot of small things to mount, or just mount stuff directly to the batons.
You can use insert nuts in ply if you want to bolt stuff on, without having to remove the ply to fit a nut and bolt.
I have bikes hanging from large horizontal timbers hammer bolted to the wall, and ply mounted directly to the wall for tools, with French cleats so I can move stuff about easily (brick walls, though)
I have 8x4 sheets of 18mm board mounted to the wall, hooks, screws for tools etc just get screwed to the sheet. Really heavy stuff I drill through the board and put a new fixing in the wall.
I painted the board with garage floor paint when I put it up, seals the board, hard wearing and can be wiped down.
I just put my boards straight on the wall, but would use batons if required/depending on the wall. Adhesive could be used for added security, easy to run a bead down the back of each baton before you mount it.
I like being able to put tools wherever I want, and they dont move, I am not a fan of peg board but like this setup. If you take screws out it looks a bit naff with screw holes so plan the layout, at the end of the day its just a sheet so can be replaced.
Mines fully boarded out with 18mm OSB (reclaimed building site hoarding, even came ready painted). I can just stick a screw in anywhere. Its well fixed up so even very heavy stuff can just be attached straight to it. Very happy with it.
