Hi All,
Does anyone know about BMW 320ds? My 2010 36,000 mile 320d went in to an independent garage for a service recently, I have used them before for different cars, and had come to trust them. This time they told me the crank pulley needs changing because it was making a noise. (£400 bill)
I cannot hear any noise at all, no noise or vibration. I have looked at the pulley and it looks like new. I cannot see any perishing rubber or feel any slack or movement.
Do they fail at 36,000 miles? would the deterioration be obvious?

Second opinion from another garage? Or try your local bmw dealer, see what they say
Id get a second opinion from another BMW specialist garage. Say that you can occasionally hear a noise and you think its coming from the belt area. Unfortunately I dont trust anyone but someone I was friends with before.
It may be only just starting to go but have miles yet and they are just being overly cautious.

Yep, its quite hard to find an expert who doesn't want to sell you something.
The rubber section of the pulleys do have a habit of going every now and again. Usually the first sign of this occurring is if the air con belt comes off if the car has air con of course.
There isn't a set service life on these you just replace it if it fails.
Start the car, then watch it, if you can get an assistant to rev the engine(not to the limiter, midway is usually more than enough) to see if there is any play during acceleration or deceleration.
I replaced my own on the van at 110k, really easy to work on though as there's loads of space in the engine bay. The part cost about 40 quid from GSF and took about an hour including getting tools out and putting away again.
Symptoms on mine where a rattling sound when driving. £400 sounds ridiculous though, definitely get another opinion

So are you saying you now don't trust them?
Does seem a lot for a crank pully. If it's worn/noisy it's obviously a rubber damped type and Peugeot/citroen use that type on diesels part only is @£100 but as some one has said GSF do an slightly lower quality one for £40 that I've use on my car for 40k and still working. Go on the GSF web site put your reg in and get the price for your self. Good luck

Like I said, I can't see or hear anything wrong with it. I wouldn't expect something like that to fail at 36k miles, and I def got the feeling that someone was telling me "porkies"
I had a look on gsf, the pulley costs 195 on its own, with the belt and other bits, the parts come to 245 quid!
I will take it to another BMW garage for another opinion.
