MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Has anyone got experience of running one of these with highish mileage - say 120k plus. I had an older 318i (g reg I think) some time ago which was built like a battleship and was still going strong at 170k when I got rid of it. Are the newer ones just as easy to maintain and reliable ?
Cheers
It's a ten year old car. It will really depend how it has been driven and looked after. If you know the history and its a good price, why not?
You might find you can get a newer other brand car with less miles for the same money though.
I've got a 330d from November 2001 it's just done 150k. Full service history and all the stamps from the intervals. Great car, you can tell when they've been looked after. Find one of those and you can't really go wrong.
The E46 was a well made car, but like most other cars needed to be looked after to keep it on the road.
Make sure that any car you are interested in has a good service history and the receipts for any other biggish pieces of work like bushes, etc.
I had a 2000 318i which I sold at 150,000 miles. It was excellent, very reliable. Did all repairs and servicing myself using cheapish OEM parts from Eurocarparts, mostly very easy to work on. Watch out for broken rear springs (cheap and easy to fix), corroded steel brake pipes at the rear (a bit of a pain to fit but not too bad), leaking radiator (cheap and east to fit), worn front wishbone bushes (easiest to replace whole wishbone and not too expensive. Only sold mine because I picked up a leg injury and needed an automatic. The car drove like new even at this mileage and certainly no body corrosion (galvanized panels).
I have a 2002 330d Sport. Very solid car and runs very well at 120K
However.
It was my first deisel beemer and I overlooked the fact it was running slightly rough which got progressivley worse. It needed an injector, which best part of 500 quid including labour 😯
If you know a local BMW specialist garage it would be worthwhile getting them to check the motor over before buying.
ps I had a 96 E36 M3 evolution with 140K on the clock and had no trouble with that car at all, which I hadnt sold it now...
