Have a Peugeot camper van, 2.0L petrol. 44k miles and 12yrs old. Uses a little water but never/doesn't over heat. Runs fine. There is tell tale milky residue under the oil cap and in the oil appiture canal and there looks to be a fair amount to. What's the best case scenario? Anything I can do?

Head skimmed and gasket replaced. Hope it hasn't warped or cracked.

Emulsion in the filler cap doesn't always mean a head gasket. If you take the radiator cap off and rev the engine, a lot of agitation and bubbles (the rad, not you) can spell trouble.

Best advice is to overtake, pull in sharply and brake hard.

Best case is the gasket is only blown.
So a replacement gasket, new oil and filter e.t.c.

Does it get used for lots of short journeys and never gets fully warmed up?
Often because of this you can get yoghurty deposits the same as a blown head gasket. Check all the breather hoses are clear and give it a good run to fully warm it up properly. How much water is it using?
You can get the coolant checked for dissolved exhaust gasses.

As above. More like short journey issues emulsifying the oil with condensation. Cure is to make sure the thermostat gets to temperature and take it on decent runs to dry the condensation out.Less than 4k miles a year is very low mileage.

If it is only milky on the filler cap, not the dip stick, not over heating then you have no problems.Take it for a long run (10miles at least ) and take it through the range of gears (high rmp) that will clear the milky stuff from the filler cap, check dip stick for any signs of water entering the head.

As others say above, it'll be just the van not warming through properly, a bit of milky oil on the filler cap is nothing to get too worried about if everything else is running fine.

not a problem.. as long as its not losing coolant you should be fine.
modern gaskets tend to go quickly with no priors..punto head gaskets just 'went' mine blew without losing any water.
