If you needed a bivi bag by Saturday and didn't have much money to spend and one of your life motto's were 'fast and light', and you need it to wild camp on Coll and lived in the highlands, what would you do?

Many thanks in advance,

Chris

Although at 6'4" Im too big for them to be comfortable so have an army-style goretex one.

Go to a military surplus shop and buy an MoD issue one.

Then, to make up for the slight weight disadvantage, I'd eat prunes for two days and save the weight the day before the race with a dump to end all dumps.

Cheers, military surplus isn't really a goer unfortunately the nearest store is a long way away sadly.

Is the Alpkit one good? I've always thought of Alpkit as being a bit like Superstar (not in a negative way - I've just never bought from either company). I guess for thirty quid you can't go wrong though, right?

Alpkit is not really anything like superstar. They design, test and have manufactured nearly all their own stuff (esp software). Superstar rebrand (or debrand) existing products.

Nearly all of Alpkit stuff is worked up from first principals and they produce fantastic stuff. The VFM is almost second-to-none.

The hunka XL wasnt in stock when I was shopping for a bivvy and as I said the small one was too small on paper, but if the XL had been available Id have jumped at it with no regrets. (although the XL is still 25cm shorter than the MIL-COM one)

I have an alpkit sleeping bag and bivi bag.

I have used both in Scotland in mid winter outdoors, very good value and more importantly it all works.

Rab eVent bags are £50-60 and perform well. Comes in a little drybag too which is always nice. Google stormbivi for more.

Herman ... think you'll find that the Rab storm bivvy most certainly isn't eVent fabric. Rab eVent bags are very good but I've never seen them for £50-£60 😉

You'll not go wrong with a Hunka in either size.

Rab survival zone (currently on offer at needle sports...) has done me proud on lots of bivi trips; coated pertex and weighs circa 400g so its lighter than most.
I've also got an ex-military one; I've never used it (previous owner has) but could be yours for £25 posted....

Alpkit. Alpkit is value stuff not cheap stuff. Order it tonight and it'll be with you by wednesday.

That said they don't breath as well as a goretex one but like you say for 30 quid...

Just an update...

I tried to buy the Alpkit one, but for some reason my paypal details didn't work out and so the payment was never sent and I only realised once it was too late... This meant I went to the local outdoor shop and bought a Rab Storm bivi for my night on Coll. I was very impressed with the Storm, especially when it poured down and I could zip myself in. The chap next to me had an Alpkit one and said that the drawstring closure meant he got midges to the face.

I think I'd have been happy with any I bought, but the most important thing is I'm looking forward to many more adventures with my bivi bag.

Thanks for all your help,

Chris
