Not sleeping under a hedge, but packing a road bike for a flight...

I've got a soft bike bag which I've used plenty of times when I've flown with my mountain bike but I'm just packing for my first flight with a road bike.

Frame is padded out as I would my mountain bike but how the hell are you supposed to secure the bars? I've removed them from the stem but which ever way I twist the bars, the shifters seem to end up in a vulnerable position. I'm also a little concerned the cables and brake hoses could get linked.

Any suggestions???

I think I try to get mine to sort of sit horizontally along the top tube with everything covered in tons of bubble wrap and tape to stop it moving around.

We use semi-hard cases and I just rest the bars against the edge of the box:

I just did this last night. I zip tied the levers into the brake on position against the bars. This keeps them out of the way.

I wish mine was that easy. I guess thats Tiagra shifter with cable exit sideways. I've got hydraulic lines and a dropper post to contend with... ☹️

Anyway, it's packed as best I can. Let's hope the baggage handlers don't lose, drop it or pile a load of heavy luggage on top of it...🤞🤞

It could be time to get rid of my old bike bag and buy something more user-friendly...

I was looking at the evoc road bike bag as not having to remove the bars and possibly not adjust the seatpost so it’s pretty much just wheels orf but it’s pricey and I really don’t travel enough to warrant it.

I think it’s generally a hard life on the bike if you have to dismantle it and tbh the Uber solid bulletproof armoured case isn’t going to fit into the taxi the other side

My favourite horror story is someone slicing a di2 cable with a seatpost whilst assembling and planning to ride up all d’huez in the morning.

I think all you can do is go mad with the bubble wrap and zip ties and make sure nothing Metallic can pop out and bounce around trashing the paintwork and hope the gods of bike look favourable on you.
