My wife has recently really got into trail running and is looking for a watch she can upload routes onto then follow. Any recommendations on which might be best?
In the same situation last year, I bought an Instinct. It doesn't have mapping but you can upload and follow a breadcrumb trail. YMMV but I didn't think I'd need the maps that often - you tend to try a few trails and end up repeating your favourites so the map's then surplus to requirements.
Following a breadcrumb trail is not without its challenges though. OK for sharp turns but if there's a fork you invariably end up taking the wrong one and by the time you've realised, you're at the bottom of a hill you need to go back up!
got a fenix 5x plus in the summer (and one of the reasons was the actual mapping)
it's dashed useful if you're in a country location you're not sure about. Less useful in the city (it's quite small after all). Bung some talkietoaster maps on, and it's great. Never get lost again
Can't answer about full mapping... but I use a Vivoactive 3 with the DWmaps widget on.
DW maps can be added onto quite a few lower priced watches, it enables you to plot a route on a smart phone or laptop, then it syncs with the watch to give a breadcrumb trail route. I work away a lot and find perfect for plotting a quick route during the day, to run straight from work wherever I am. But it isn't good enough to set of across a moor / hillside with no other navigation...
